Problem with disappearing crystals?

Migrated topic.

SWIM has completed a run of extraction and recently ran the DMT crystals formed in the freezer through a coffee filter. All the crystals stuck to the filter, but SWIM is letting it sit to air dry and noticed all the crystals have disappeared. Will they return as the solvent evaporates or is this a lost cause?

What would be a better way to filter out the crystals after an extraction? What does SWIY normally do?

Thanks,
RevB

My friend's cousin had the same problem. It is because as the solvent heats up, it starts to absorb more and more spice. They won't return in their original quantity thats for sure. A good bit will be stuck in the filter and whatever surface was below the filter. Soak the filter in a tiny bit of warm solvent and squeeze it out and freeze precip that if it seems a good bit are stuck in there. And scrape the table or whatever it was left to dry on.

There are 2 options I know of to prevent this.

Dry the crystals on glass

Buy a vacuum pump to quickly suck the cold solvent out.

SWIM filtered through a coffee filter, then place the coffee filter and whatever fell of into a pyrex sheet. Within 20 seconds SWIM noticed that the gorgeous amount of crystals quickly became 1/8th that. Should SWIM remove whatever crystals as possible from the filter and place on glass or let them remain on coffee filter?

Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The crystals redissolved into your coffee filter as the solvent warmed. Next time, remove the crystals from any source of excess solvent immediately, and place them on a non-porous surface to dry.

In regard to your current situation, remove any remaining crystals and soak coffee filter in minimal amount of solvent. This will extract the lost crystal mass from the dmt laden coffee filter. Evaporate to recover.

Freeze precipitation can be tricky; slow evaporation and recrystallization work better and can yield higher quality (after recrystallizing).

SWIM is a little fearful of slow evaporation. Any sort of tek SWIM could read about slow evaporation that SWIY would recommend?

Is your freezer getting cold enough?

You should take the jar of crystals & naptha out of the freezer, and straight to the filter, as quickly as possible!! Only pause to take the lid off!

If you did this very fast and you still ended up with you crystals melting back into the naptha, your freezer may be getting just cold enough to squeeze some crystals out of the naptha. But maybe not cold enough to really solidify them.

How long did you leave the jar in the freezer? (Needs to be at least 48 hours, a week is better!!)

Water getting trapped in your jar is another reason for spice seeming to "melt" and get trapped in your filter. It will be ice by the time you are taking the jar out of the freezer. It will then melt if you get it in the filter with you naptha & spice causeing the crystals to warm up much faster than normal and begin to melt as well!!!
(If you did a sodium carbonate wash on your alka-loaded naptha, when your finished, you need to let the naptha sit a bit before going into the freezer for precipitation, to make sure there is absolutely no water caught in the naptha. It will fall to the bottom, so you can get it out.)

Did you seal the jar good? You don't want the oxygen in the empty space of the jar, to condensate on the inside of the jar causing water in there!! This can (will) happen if the jar is not completely sealed!! Especially if your freezer doesn't get super cold!!!

SWIM assures SWIY that the freezer is ice cold. The first attempt, SWIM had white crystals that did not seem to melt at all (except when being smoked), but this attempt SWIM's crystals almost completely disappeared.

SWIM stored the jar in the freezer for 48 hours. This morning there was considerable amount of crystals on the pyrex dish SWIM let them evaporate on, but there was somewhat of like a transparent goo around them. SWIM thinks it might be left over naptha that did not fully evaporate. SWIM will scrape the pyrex and see what will dry off, then give it a try.

SWIM wants to know how to recrystallize if at all possible.
