Rue Harmala Extract Guidance Plz

Hi, so I'm trying to get some smokeable harmala freebase from some Rue seeds to make some changa.
Am following a Harmallama Tek pdf found on the nexus.
Am a bit of a noobie when it comes to rue seeds so just want to check I'm doing it right.

I added a Sodium Carbonate Solution to the tea I made, and it changed colour as expected, next step is to leave overnight, which I have done.
But checking it the next morning, I was expecting to see an upper liquid layer and a bottom layer with the Harmala.
It kind of looks like three layers, clear on top, large cloudy/snowy middle and what I presume is the small harmala bottom layer, is this normal?
Next step says, Pour the liquid out from the upper part of the jar, leaving the bottom part with the Harmalas.
So do I pour out the snowy section? Have I messed this up somewhere along the way? too much SCS or something? Or do I simply need to give it much more time to settle?

I should probably note, I only started with 50g of rue as a first time tester, so not expecting a massive amount

Any guidance will be massively appreciated!

Just stir gently the middle layer with a thin stick, then wait/decant, it should help settling things down. Repeat if needed. Also, before doing the very first basification step ( = adding sodium carbonate solution), it's better to filter the tea through a cotton cloth to start discarding some gunk.
The bottom layer is the crude extract, which can be used as it is or be refined with further A/B and filtration steps.
If you're a bit in a hurry, you could just harvest the crude extract you already have, refine it or not, and transfer the top layer to another jar that you could let sit long enough to see if it will form another bottom layer.

Believe it or not, I did this.
After simmering seeds, I strained with a cotton cloth, then after sitting in fridge overnight I passed it through a funnel with cotton balls.

I think my possible mistake was maybe with making the Sodium Carbonate Solution.
I added cooked baking soda to a pint of water till no more dissolved then put that through a coffee filter,
but then I left it sitting in a jar overnight and it had a few bits in, in the morning.
I gave it a good mix until it looked like it had all dissolved again, thinking that it should be ok, I then put that in the tea.

Maybe I should have just remade the Sodium Carbonate Solution or put it through another coffee filter?

but then I left it sitting in a jar overnight and it had a few bits in, in the morning.

I don't think there is a mess or mistake, that might happen because at first, exothermic heat lets dissolve more SC but when it sits for a while and temperature goes down, excess SC might precipitate again. I prefer to use SC directly rather than reducing baking soda to SC and I use a measured ratio of 2g SC for 1cl water. Heating the water a bit helps for faster dissolution. But anyway, if your SC solution has remaining excess SC, it will dissolve in the soup, that's not really a problem. The cloudy and more or less stagnating middle layer should be considered as normal part of the extraction, not the sign that something goes wrong. Patience and gentle stirs in circles is usually the key to get rid of it.

My fridge door vibrates at an almost unnoticeable frequency, so I always use it to settle stuff. A few days of fridge door treatment, and everything settles at the bottom.
Usually, there is at least one place at home with an electric appliance that vibrates. I bet that even those ultrasonic beer surgers / foamers would work wonders.

I would prefer a measured amount, the adding till no more dissolves seems like a strange instruction to me

I was possibly slightly panicked when waking up and it was not exactly as predicted.

I would assume that ingesting the harmala brew, resin, or harmala alkaloids first and giving them some time to take effect before smoking or vaping DMT/changa would produce a more pronounced and consistent effect. With changa, the harmala alkaloids and DMT are combined and inhaled together. That can certainly work as well, but it seems more reasonable to assume that allowing the harmalas to take effect first, ideally reaching a substantial level of activity, would result in stronger or more reliable potentiation of the subsequently inhaled DMT.

@8of10 are you planning to further separate the harmala alkaloids? Dividing them into harmine and harmaline?
Theoretically, you could make three different changa blends,
1. harmala alkaloid mix
2. harmaline
3. harmine

Also, a side note: I read somewhere that users should be cautious with smoking/vaping harmala alkaloids because apparently there is a higher chance of overdosing using that route of administration.

Seems fine to me, just gently stir it and let settle again.
Sometimes diluting it with water helps too.
Do you know pH of your solution?

2. harmaline
3. harmine

More, if you proceed with devising specific ratios of harmine to harmaline, and yet more if you go as far as reducing some harmaline to THH (tetrahydroharmine).

With this batch, after passing the bottom layer through a coffee filter to collect the Crude Harmala Freebase extract, I planned to...

- Refining Crude Harmala Extract into Smokeable Harmala Freebase -

1. Fill a jar 2/3rd up using ½ water ½ vinegar then mix in your Crude Harmala Extract
2. Pour through a coffee or funnel filter to catch + discard anything that will not dissolve in
3. Add SSCS and stir to initiate the color change of the harmala crashing out
4. Slowly add SSCS and stir until the color remains changed, then a splash more of SSCS
5. Let settle overnight. 2 layers will form, with your harmala powder in the bottom layer
6. Pour off the top layer and discard it.
7. Pour the bottom layer through a coffee filter to collect Harmala Freebase powder on filter.
8. Use powder and repeat steps 1-7 at least 2 or more times. Let dry on coffee filter.
9. The final refined harmala on the coffee filter will be Smokeable Harmala Freebase powder.


This was all I was going to do. Then carefully weigh some out and infuse using IPA into some herbs with dmt.

I've not really researched too much into the different harmala alkaloid mix , harmaline, harmine. I'm fairly new to all this.
I've just looked into making changa, and as I understand it, I need this stuff or I'm just making 'dmt infused leaf'.
If this all works out alright, looking into that may be my next step.

Filtering might prove to be a massive PITA. A lot of recent teks suggest settle, decant, wash, repeat ^n as a more tolerable means of separating the alks.

After following the above steps, I was going to make a mix of something like 800mg dmt, 200mg harmala, 1g various dry herbs.
Is this something I should worry about? Overdosing is not something I want to be doing.

20 - 30 mg is a usual safe dose for smoked harmalas, so unless you smoke more than a third of your changa at once, this concern is unlikely to be an issue, and in any case that would be a terrifyingly huge dose of DMT(800/3 = 266...) making the ~67 mg of harmalas possibly of secondary concern - at least to start with.
