Hello,
I am looking at getting a 1000ml sep funnel. I was wondering is a stand necessary? If it isn't how would i hold the funnel, or can I make something that would hold it or should I just get it?

We made our own. We went to the used wood/scrap pile at Home Depot to minimize expenses. Already had a drill with a screw attachment, including a very large spinning disk.

Taking a piece of wood for the base, we attached (Gorilla glue, screws, etc.) two other boards on the side standing up vertically. Attached a board on top with a hole in it that matched the swelling/fat part of the bulb of the sepratory funnel. We also placed a center board in this box with a hole in it that matched the narrow/neck part of the funnel in size. This for additional bracing/safety.

Now we had what looked like the sides of a box with a shelf and without a base or lid - stand this "box" on the side, significantly weight/brace the bottom, and boom! Instant ghetto, super-stable, ultra-cheap stand.

It's a good idea, but you can't beat a regular old ring stand with the three different size rings. You have easy access to everything and being all metal makes it very easy to clean. It is also very useful for holding funnels for filtering or transferring liquids. It's a very basic tool that any hobbyist should have, and not just for chemistry.
