on the s. capensis, how long did yours take to Germ?

The three that germinated did so quicker than I expected.. I think they were poking up within a week.

I hope so too! I'm a total heat addict.. so much so that I've made myself cut back because I was starting to worry I was doing harm to myself from eating super spicy foods all the time.

But I ordered those Bhut Jalokia seeds today anyway... Everything in moderation right? I also got got a few Perskiopsis cuttings, Trich. Pachanoi and Bridgesii seeds

I'm not sure about the brown tips... mine doesn't have that now that it's stable and happy in it's current pot but I feel like it did go through a period when it was younger and possibly due to being transplanted where it got a little brown like that. but that was many months ago so my memory is a little foggy on that

how's it looking now? has it bounced back?

nope its still droopy and edges are still brown, it hasnt gotten worse but hasnt changed

also a new addition to the forest im sure you can guess what this is

The fact that it's not getting any worse is a good sign. I'm guessing it'll recover with time though the already brown tips will stay that way as the plant grows. I thinking that mine went through something similar early on and couldn't remember what happened with the brown tips... if you look real close at my picture, the bottom most set of leaves have brown tips too and I think that's from what I'm remembering. But the plants keeps growing and putting out new healthy leaves=)

I checked on one of my leaf cuttings because I was curious and it has roots! yay!


Looks like some nice PF cakes you've got there. These are nocced up with Golden Teacher? May they grow big and beautiful (and full of magic)

ahh that makes me feel better!! thanks,also how long did yours take between leaf sets? im trying to get a hold on the speed of growth of the p viridis, and yep they sure are, and thanks for the kind words im just hoping for no contams

ahh i see, still not to shabby! and yes it is im hoping i get all jars contam free, but if some are contaminated i hope i get at least one but i was very careful to clean everything and i made a little still air box...

But I was hasty and didn't pay much attention to cleanliness. I inoculated open air and incubated them in the dirtiest spot in my house. lol. I was just excited I guess and cut corners all over the place. After that I really buckled down and got to work on cleaning up my methods and started doing everything in a hepa filtered schmuvbox, got a good pressure cooker, and paid close attention to getting the hydration right (my first attempt was too wet on top of all the other mistakes I made)

won't still have a syringe and half of spores left and so far they look good I see some germination (very very light whitish fog color ) I assume that's good? No green or pink or any mold yet so that's good !! I don't have a pressure cooker though, I used the boil method for almost two hours Then nocced them when they were luke warm

Awesome, sounds good so far if you're seeing white!

It's generally recommended to let them cool completely to avoid possibly killing the spores with any residual heat. But if you see white, then you're in the clear as far as that goes. It's very unlikely that it would be anything other than myc at this point. Usually contams don't show up until after a week or so.

The boil method works well for many folks, pressure cookers are just really nice to have because after an hour at 15psi, you can be certain that everything in there is sterile from the start. Kinda removes some of the uncertainty

By Luke warm I mean about 75 ish degrees F so no spores should have been killed now it's sitting on a shelf at around 73-80 degrees depending on air circulation, but thanks for the info on the contams, ill most definitely keep my eye out !!! And what did the pressure cooker run ya? If you don't mind me asking

Well, I got a new All American.. so it sad a bit of an investment at $175 but it's wonderful and my wife and I do a lot of food preservation so it was well worth it in my opinion.

I know you can get a quality, smaller pressure cooker for much less, maybe in the $50-$70 range , especially if you can find a used one.

bad news, the dang MG potting soil is doing a number on the MJ that soil is so off on ph and hot spotted with nutes its ridiculous i hope they survive the full term, as im trying my hardest to correct them, a friend lent it to me and claimed it was soil-less mix turns out he lent me the wrong one ..

i transplanted them into the vermiculite and perlite but the roots still had ahold of the MG soil from the cup...... do you think i could soak the root tangle to loosen release the MG or would the roots be damaged

Glad to hear that about your Viridis!

Bummer about the MJ though I know nothing about growing that however so I can't offer any advice there.. It's hard for me to make any guesses about what would be harder on the plant... the extra nutrients stuck in the soil attached to the roots or fiddling around with the roots. I tend to err on the side of caution and less tampering with things. But that's just me=)

I finally got around to uploading pictures of some of my other plant friends:

The sinicuichi (sun opener) looks dead but it's not. I had about 6 of these outside in my green house this winter. I read that they were fairly cold tolerant and they are to an extent..they all lost their upper leaves and the largest of them kept putting up shoots around the base, getting really bushy. Obviously still kicking.. this one was one of the smaller ones and I worried that it wasn't going to pull through so I brought it inside. You can't really see it in this picture but it has a bunch of tiny little green buds forming all up the stem.

The Alba in this pic is the same one from my earlier post.

Here's where I've been starting my seeds for the past couple months.. My house is extremely dry and not very warm and this worked wonderfully. Though it took me a while to get the humidity dialed in. This served as my FC last year.

Veggies for the garden this year!

Here's the Silene Capensis. These have since been transplanted to a more free draining soil. It was far too damp and starting to damp off here.

My little Acacias: I've had a hard time making these guys happy. First they were in potting soil that was all peat and too soggy.. then I moved them to something that was a mix of regular potting soil and sand/gravel and they really didn't like that. Finally I moved them to this (a mix of perlite and cactus soil). I don't think this is ideal either but at least they're improving and growing slowly instead of dying. I ordered seeds for Acacia Acuminate and Acacia Acuminata. I had a hard time getting the Acuminata seeds to germinate and the ones that did died off quickly. The Acuminate did much better. Other than that, I don't know much about the differences between the two.

2jttz - Regarding your MJs, if you think the soil and roots have excess of nutrients, you should wash them. Immersion in spring or distilled water for a bit, and then letting the water drain completely, should clean them up. Check my signature, there's info in sections 6.2.2 and 9.4.

Nice little plants there! Are you going to actually plant them all together somewhere? I think that's a really cool idea. I just picked up some Acacia seeds, If I had space, I would like to create a multilayered eco-system with those and some Calea, San Pedro, Wild Dagga, Klip Dagga, and other herbs.

Btw, 2jttz, where did you get your bitter caleas? After years of not being able to find it anywhere, I just decided to start it from seed. It's not really practical to do that (out of 250 seeds 3 germinated, only 1 survived, and after a year of growth it's only about 5 inches tall)... so it would be nice to know of other sources that I could buy live plants from.

I'm not quite sure where they'll all end up yet.. I plan to keep dividing the phalaris and moving clumps outdoors.

I probably won't be able to put the more delicate plans anywhere too permanent since my climate won't sustain them all year round. but I do have a greenhouse and closed in porch that gets lots of sun. I just have to figure out the heating situation to keep things from freezing in the winter.

thanks for the advice vodsel, MJ has never given any problems until these two so all the advice is awesome they are looking much better now, i think part of the issue is the potting soil was slightly acidic also on top of too much nutes

also for anyone in the future who has the same problem as me with the viridis the reason it was wilting is i was acclimated to quickly to low RH (16%)

its much better now, ill let it grow a strong root system then try to acclimate it again
