Testing Solvents

SWIM wanted to test out his solvent (Kleanstrip VM&P Naphtha from Home Depot) to see if it was "clean". Tried a couple of evaps and noticed what looked like dirt at the bottom of his evaporating dish (after very little evaporation). So SWIM is suspicious. HOWEVER, SWIM doesn't notice "dirt" sinking to the bottom of covered jars of the solvent, so suspects this might just be dirt from the air.

Any thoughts on a good testing protocol?

I got a bad bottle of shellite (naptha)one time when I was trying an extraction on Acacia longifolia. It seems to have been contaminated with white spirit or some diesel like oily product. I check the bottles before I buy them now, I just dip my finger in the liquid and blow and watch it evaporate. If my finger looks damp afterwards and smells like solvent then that's no good but if it evaporates away quickly leaving a mild whitish colour on my finger then it is fine. The whitish colour is all your natural skin oils getting washed away and your fingertip feels very dry. Try it out, you will see what I mean.
