Does anyone else ever hear this?
Also make sure the volume is up.
Yep. I assume that is a common occurrence that most, if not all people hear on DMT. Terence McKenna always described it as "the sound of cellophane ripping... I wouldn't have described it this way had I never heard him do so. To me, it sounds like cicadas or crickets rubbing their wings or speaker/microphone feedback, but with an "overtone" quality. It it also quite similar to the hum one hears after a loud concert or when one suffers from chronic tinnitus.
In fact, now that I reflect on it, I think it IS tinnitus. Some researchers have said that tinnitus doesn't actually have anything to do with the ears, but is the sound of an electrical "feedback loop" of neurons in the brain firing back and forth in the absence of sound input from the ears.
DMT shuts off the brain's contact with the ears and eyes and turns it all inward. The sound you hear is the sound of your brain working, the feedback hum of the electricity coursing through your brain cells. Building on this, perhaps the "chrysanthemum" (again a McKenna word I would not personally use to describe the image) many experience at the beginning of the trip is the visual equivalent of tinnitus... Seeing the activity of brain in the absence of ocular input... But I don't know.
One thing I do know, is that recording you linked to, although recorded at FAR to low a volume, is an excellent simulacrum of the actual sound (at least as I have heard it). I'd be interested in knowing how this recording was synthesized.
In my own trips, it has always seemed like all the sounds I was hearing as I went under (a fan, the kids playing upstairs, the dehumidifier) all seemed to "melt" into THE HUM, like all sound is somehow the "child" of this sound and is born out of it, and that when we enter The Dome, we are allowed to return to the beginning of sound (and of everything else). I have also heard this sound many times while under deep meditation, although nowhere near as loudly or all-devouring as is heard on DMT. It is this reason that I am convinced that this sound is "The Word" of St. John's Gospel("in the beginning was The Word and The Word was with God and the Word WAS God" in Latin, "In principio erat verbum et verbum erat apud deum et deus erat verbum") , the OM of Hindu Mysticism... The Sound God chanted to bring the world into being. Paramhansa Yogananda called the sound "The hum of the cosmic motor."
It is interesting that the phrase, in Latin says "the Word was with God and God was the Word" but is is most often, or classically translated as "the Word was with God and the Word was God" The Latin order of the phrase is also present in the original Greek. This, to me, is significant. If it said the Word was with God and God IS the Word, then the order of the two synonyms (The Word and God) aren't important. Since, however, the tense is past, (was), then the implication is that those things are no longer in that state. IF the Word was with God and WAS God, it implies that God is in the position of primacy, because the Word has somehow stepped down from being at one with God and is now something somehow different than God. If The Word was with God and God WAS the Word, then it is The Word that is the FIRST THING, the source, the thing that God steps down from. I think that the next verses confirm this idea, as they glorify and expand on the idea of the Word being the FIRST THING, the Source, the Place of Primacy.
Wow... I had never really considered that stuff about The Word until just now... The idea kind of formulated itself as I was typing. I LOVE it when that happens! THE WORD at work in the world! I did get quite a bit off-topic from the DMT hum, though, didn't I?!
