Lanmaoa asiatica ("jian shou qing" / 见手青) — the Yunnan "little people" bolete

Posting this because it went semi-viral on Chinese social media over the last year or two (#jianshouqing has racked up 100M+ views on Xiaohongshu/Douyin) and I'm surprised it hasn't come up here yet. Recapping what's actually documented, since most English coverage is either tabloid-y ("Janet Yellen ate magic mushrooms") or too thin to be useful.

## What it is

A reddish bolete that grows in symbiosis with pine roots (*Pinus yunnanensis*) in Yunnan, China, and in the Cordillera region of the Northern Philippines (where it's called *Sedesdem*). Chinese name *jianshouqing* (见手青) means "sees the hand, turns blue" — the flesh oxidizes to indigo on cutting/bruising. It's a legitimately prized wild edible, rich in umami — once properly cooked.

## The effect

Eaten raw or undercooked, it reliably produces "Lilliputian hallucinations": vivid visions of numerous tiny (~2–30 cm), fully three-dimensional autonomous people, embedded realistically in your actual physical environment — walking under doors, climbing furniture, scaling walls, obeying normal physics. Not abstract/geometric like classic psychedelics — anchored and detailed.

## Timing (the part that actually matters)

- **Onset: 12–24 hours after eating.** Not minutes, not hours — closer to a full day later.
- **Duration: 1–7 days, sometimes weeks.**
- Insight is preserved throughout — people know they're intoxicated.
- Documented side effects: GI upset, occasional delirium. No deaths linked to it; recovery appears complete.

## Cross-cultural convergence (the genuinely wild part)

The *same* specific hallucination — tiny autonomous people — has been independently reported in Yunnan, the Northern Philippines, and (via an unrelated mushroom, *nonda*) in Papua New Guinea's Western Highlands since the 1930s, with zero historical contact between these groups. Possible written reference in a 3rd-century Daoist text in China.

## The science, as of 2026

Colin Domnauer (PhD student) and mycologist Bryn Dentinger (University of Utah) used DNA sequencing to confirm the Chinese and Philippine mushrooms are the same species — *Lanmaoa asiatica* — published in *Mycologia*, June 2026.

But the active compound is **still unidentified**. Ruled out: psilocybin, muscimol, ibotenic acid — none of the known mushroom hallucinogens show up. What's known about the mystery compound: it's thermolabile (destroyed by cooking, hence why cooked mushrooms are safe), unusually water-soluble/polar, and — per an unconfirmed hypothesis from Domnauer — might be an unusually large protein, possibly acting via the gut or brainstem rather than as a classic small-molecule hallucinogen crossing into the brain. The mushroom can't be cultivated in a lab, so all research depends on wild-collected specimens from Yunnan/Philippines field trips.

## Why it's actually interesting, not just a curiosity

A compound that reliably produces such a specific, narratively consistent hallucination (autonomous *people*, not patterns or colors) across unconnected cultures is a strange result. It suggests whatever process the brain uses to construct "a person" as a perceptual category can be selectively triggered — which has implications for understanding *spontaneous* Lilliputian hallucinations seen in things like Charles Bonnet syndrome, entirely without a mushroom involved.

**The honest caveat, for anyone thinking about this beyond reading:** the delayed onset + multi-day duration combination means there's no real way to "work up to it" the way you might titrate a shorter-acting substance. You commit a full day before you know anything happened, to an effect that could run anywhere from one day to multiple weeks, with no established dose–intensity relationship. Even Domnauer, who's spent years around fresh specimens, has said he hasn't dosed himself, citing the unknown minimum effective dose and the delirium/dehydration risk. Worth having that front of mind before this thread.
turns into a "how do I get some" discussion.

Sourcing dried jianshouqing does turn up in Chinese specialty-food/herbal export listings, though nobody knows whether drying (as opposed to cooking) preserves or destroys the active compound — genuinely unknown either way.

Now I have a few actions I'm going to engage as I discussed in chat already,
A: contact my south east asian contacts, I'd love to have some in Yunnan province China, but I'll go with Phillipines and Indonesia.
B : Got to check if the actives are still good once the raw mushroom is dried
C : it is a polar active, it does great in water so maybe see for extraction, or if performing a Liquide Culture on spores would make mycelium, if the mycelium is active or can be inoculated in a spécial set up indoor bonsaï tree like but that's probably too far out.. domestication might be a bit too early ;)
D : learn more about specific growing conditions.

Huh... first I'm hearing this. I've read several Chinese articles, and to my memory, they say onset occurs during the meal in which the undercooked mushroom was consumed, with effects lasting maybe into the next morning.

Anyhow, are you looking into making a field trip or are you leaning toward obtaining dried material?

There's already a thread about it, maybe they could be merged: Lilliputian Mushrooms (Lanmaoa asiatica)

Same. It's not unlikely the LLM just made it up.

I had a "conversation" about drugs and alcohol with an LLM once, and it claimed that LLMs have no equivalent to what we humans do to alter their "consciousness." The closest thing to it would be their programers adding in or altering their code....

Hey
I just had a chinese volunteer on my farm ; he was one of the dude at the origin of spreading the infos, before it went viral.
He had many journey with these and he is familiar with it. It's not a news, people in his region know about it since ever ; they can buy it at the market, and they cook it well.

From his research, the results were :

Very well cook : no trip
Raw : never had a trip himself (?!)
Not well cooked : sometime trip, sometime he trips when he eats left over the next day. Could be because of long onset, or because of complex action of low heat + time + reheating (that's his hypothesis)
Dry : still ongoing research.

Trip up to 3 days for him
Dosage ... i don't have much data, but we speaking of 5-20g dry equivalent, from what i gathered.

Effect : the little people is only one possibility of the trip of course! This is the reductionist, dodgy aspect of viral news. He says , more interestingly, there were floating objects, which acted as "Screens", and he could watch all kind of things, possibly from the collective consciousness. These floating, multidimentional "technology" could also project a physical object into the room. These hallucination were persistent. To the point that filming it, then watching the film the next day, would still show it (if under the effect). Some objects could stay in his room up to 3 days, until the effect wears off.

I got a sample (dry). I will try in the next weeks. Suggested protocole : warm up water to 70°, let them sit for 1h ; warm it up again to 70°C and drink/eat while hot. i have 10g to try.

Very interesting. Little people being just one possibility sounded most likely. It still seems to be of a different character than psychedelics.

Did that person report any changes beyond visuals?

I can ask more detail, maybe if you guys have more question i can collect and get in touch with him
But from what he said, he seems mostly functional - he sometimes had to go to work while under the effect and it was fine.
Part of the effect seems closer to delirium / datura style ; yet different, as he was able to discern hallucination from reality.

He is still unable to nail a protocole + dosage that works reliably. Most of the time he trip "by surprise"
Sounds a bit like amanita....

Yes, I would look to get dried material. But if it's a hit or miss, gotta see.
I didn't see a thread about it.

And yes, thanks Quetzal to chime in, of course it's not new, it's a old boletus staple there, just, us, here ( I am glad to convey first hand experience if you can ), we don't hear much about it.

And the whole chemistry of it is still unknown.
So you say it has to be not raw but just lighly cooked and maybe best to let it sit ( curing ?) for a day or two.

Maybe there are enzymes that converts like a decarb then a fermentation ( that occurs either before or after a decarb if it's not raw or well cooked, but only when just lighly cooked.

Thanks everyone that chime in, the current research didn't crack the code, even if it's known there since centuries. Well maybe some people there knows more, like it's probably understood somewhere, especially where its native.

This is the first report from a psychonaut about the effects I am aware of. All others I've read are reports from hospitals or scientific papers.
