Used tinfoil instead of lid while shaking basified water, have i messed up?

So for the reason that I had no and couldn't get proper mixing bottle I improvised by cutting large vine bottle and putting tin foil over it. Now after mixing and before pulling I noticed some coagulation of basified mixture at the neck of the bottle and in the top layer of the mix floating around. I guess that mixture and tinfoil aren't supposed to touch each other, but some of the gunk already dropped into the mix.

So my question is, is my mixture contaminated and ruined or can I still pull from it since there is only some of that stuff floating on the surface?


Also, has anyone had similar problem?

Try to search first before asking a question, also since you you seem to miss basic chemistry knowledge search before making changes to a tek.
Search and learn before making mistakes that could potentially harm you very badly.

And you learn best on your mistakes, I just want to know is mixture ruined with it? I managed to pull naptha from it without a problem and it doesn't look different than it should, but opinions from others would mean a lot.

You can clean it up by back salting and rextal but I don't think it is necessary.

This is true, but if that mistake includes being blinded because you managed to splash concentrated hydroxide solution in your eye's, i don't think that is a the price you want to pay.

The scenario being something like this.
The aluminum reacts with the hydroxide forming H2 which is a highly flammable gas, also your foil gets weakened. This reaction will pressurize the bottle while you pull, rolling the bottle in your hands then suddenly splash .....

learning from mistakes is only an option if the consequences are bearable.

I was aware that splashes and other spills could happen, that's why I took most of the essential safety measures like gloves, goggles, face mask and similar stuff. Even if spills did happen on unprotected areas there was vinegar prepared.

Still, it was kinda stupid of me not to check if aluminium is reactive with the solution, then again good thing that I made that mistake right of the bat, it would probably be more harmful if I did it in some future occasion, potentially more dangerous than this.

That's all very moot AFTER you've burned your skin off/blinded yourself forever.

Chemistry has no place for mistakes.

I have a licensed high explosives lab,.. a small mistake might only poison the room or precipitate calcium or metals into your blood.

Hydrogen gas on a similar note, is also highly explosive. Be warned that lodging chunks of hand bone into your chest cavity or setting your house on fire is a mistake indeed.

Two things to think about while making mistakes:

How are you going to explain yourself to EMTs, also how will you explain methlab-esque injuries to hospital staff.

You will have plenty of time behind bars to learn from your mistakes. A sensationalist media already portrays 'DMT labs' as highly explosive and similar to a meth lab.

I hardly think so. I'm sure I'm not the only one here that heats their base soup prior to mixing. I've been sprayed with a molten alkaline solution in the past when my flask overpressurized.

It wasn't fun, but fortunately we all have some vinegar nearby (right?). If you are unprepared, such as not wearing goggles then a slight spray from over pressure might really ruin your day. Trust me if I got blinded I'd be calling 911

^bettet to be too cautious than deal with the consequences. What are the consequences of his researching more? He might get frustrated and learn more about extraction than he even set out to do? And the alternative consequences have been listed above. I think that the points made above about research and further forethought are worth consideration, but that's just my two cents.

I can't speak for where OP is but dodging questions with suspicious chemical burns has gotten people in trouble before. IF, this is unlikely to happen but if for whatever circumstances you get your eyes burned, and must get immediate medical attention. That could very well mean somebody comming into your home and what are they going to find there?

White powder? Chemicals? Crude chemistry instruments?

I'm not anyone's mommy but I think OP was more worried about imediate concerns. I thought this was worth pointing out.
