Wash to remove Solvent Impurities

Migrated topic.

This guy was talking about doing toluene pulls after the naptha pulls and getting an orange wax that has a sweetish solvent smell to it that doesn't go way. The guy also said that he read online that Ace brand toluene doesn't evaporate clean.

Is there any sort of wash that would remove solvent impurities?

This guy said his plan right now is to melt what he can of the wax in heptane, and perform a freeze precip on the heptane. Surely the solvent impurities would redissolve back into the heptane, and the freeze precip would leave only minor traces of it on the wax.

Another idea is to crush up the orange wax as small as possible, put it into a coffee filter and pour ice cold naptha over it, similar to the ammonia wash. This would allow the orange wax to remain as a single substance, instead of the heptane method which would probably result in yellow crystals and a little bit of darker orange wax.

Has this person actually tried evaporating a sample of his toluene to test for residues? It's entirely normal to get an orange gunk extracting using toluene... this material has been the subject of much speculation (see the Jungle Spice thread).

If the material is solvent residue, it's impossible to know how well heptane recrystallization would work without knowing what the residue is. It's definitely worth a shot though, I don't think there's anything to lose by trying. With luck, the material is either insoluble to heptane or is freely soluble in it.

An easy way to find out would be to evap a good quantity of this Ace brand Toulene. Gather up the residue and see if it dissolves in heptane. If it does, you can remove solvent residue by washing with heptane, freeze precipitate out the spice and tossing the remaining heptane. If not, you can still recover the DMT with heptane and toss the jungle spice.

You'll end up with jungle-spice and regular spice (minus the impurities).
