what are your methods at getting the naphtha off?

Migrated topic.
My cat uses a turkey baster to do a "rough" pull into a decanting glass. Then decants into a second decanting glass, then into whatever he is going to evap the solvent in. by the time you get past the 2nd decanting glass there is never anyhting but clean yellow naptha.

I think this sounds more complicated than it actually is but my cat is bad at explaining things and I'm tired 😉

SWIM just uses a good ol' eye dropper. It takes him awhile (maybe about 45mins to 1 hour), but what's the rush? It's all worth it in the end. Just put on some good tunes and get to work :D

For those without syringe/baster/sep-funnel, or for ease with large volumes of solvent, you can 'jack the ripper' it; decant total solution into as many milk jugs as you need, stand the jug in a bowl and stab a hole just above the solvent line. The solvent will drain into the bowl for collection, wear gloves of course because you need to plug the hole to remove the bottle of basified solution. Don't forget to have unpunctured jugs to pour the base solution into when you're done.

I really liked that idea but failed to read the bit about putting the jugs into a container. I gave it a test run using just water and the low weight of the test liquid meant that it only dribbled out of the container. Will have to try it again.

Another way of separating liquids is to allow to separate in milk bottles then use something like a scalpel blade to pierce the bottom. Hey presto! Ghetto separatory funnel :)

Make the initial flow a little slower by keeping the lid screwed on and unscrew once you've stopped fiddling about creating your hole.

The only problems I've run into is when there is too much sediment at the bottle, which can stop or slow down flow, if this does cause a problem get an object that can be inserted into the bottom hole and give it a bit of a wiggle about.

Crush bottles after use to prevent accidents and mix-ups with other, un-pierced bottles.

Can be a bit messy, remember gloves and goggles!

What I forgot to mention is that you use the lid to control flow. With the lid tightly on you will get a trickle, as you loosen it the liquid will pour out freely and will slow back if you tighten.

SWIM uses a turkey baster for the majority. Then uses a small measuring cup for that last bit. He puts the cup in side ways till it breaks the surface, and it only pulls up the top layer if performed correctly. Only problem is you can only get a little at a time.

SWIM mixes his naptha and base sol't in a beer bottle, then he puts a cork with 2 tubes coming out of it on the bottle. One of the tubes is for draining the sol't the other is for controlling the flow (less air = less flow), this method works great for him and is nice because it minimizes the times SWIM has too pour the liquids (which SWIM will invariably spill) and SWIM can just stick the bottle in the freezer to freeze precipitate.

SWIM agrees with funkatron9000, multiple decanting makes things so easy... there's a million different ways to use that, SWIM has done dirty pulls with a syringe, but then found simply pouring the top of the container into another container then decanting again will always work...

I find puring into a water or milk bottle, letting it settle and then cutting just above the solvent line with the bottle sitting in a glass bowl works quite well. BTW this was with limonene not naphtha but its the same idea...

Separatory funnel is invaluable. It works, extremely well, every time. You can get a 500ml one off eBay for less than 40 bucks! SWIM suggests anyone who has trouble getting the naptha out try a sep. funnel. You won't be disappointed.

When SWIM was using a turkey baster like apparatus and was having trouble getting all the naptha, a friend of SWIM suggested to do the extraction (rolling/stirring) in a long neck bottle. It sounder ingenious when SWIM hear it! SWIM used Sky Vodka bottles at the time, but then found better ones.

So you fill the bark tea up to where the neck starts, then add naptha. Roll around, wait... And then your naptha is stuck in the top skinny part of the bottle, thus making it easier to gather/suck up!

Just reread the post and saw this one.

Be careful not to breath in/inhale the fumes (if you are using hazardous substances such as naptha) long term exposure cant be good.

On this note: SWIM just is thinking about ordering the following from ebay. SWIM knows its for paint and particles, but thought it might help with fumes + it would be great for working with the powdered bark!
