What exactly happens when one adds regular table salt.

Migrated topic.

I've been told that table salt can help emulsions when working with a STB like noman's.

I finally had the chance of starting to evap my naptha to prepare for a freeze precip. I took a very small puddle before it has evaped from one of the jars filled with dmnt-naptha and placed it into an empty jar under a fan. When my alarm went off this small puddles has turned to a small pile of crystals with a little bit of impurities in them.

When I did noman's extraction I did add like 5g's of table salt in great fear of emulsions and I believes that it worked but I think my dmt is contanimated.

I have not checked the crystals for potency yet but when taking a little bit on the finger and touching my tough it burned my tough and almost tasted like strong table salt.

I am afraid that a large amount of table salt got into my naptha pulls. If I do a freeze precip with the jar of naptha, supposing that the salt is in it, will it maybe leave the salt in the naptha.

Is it possible to wash my product. Is it safe to test this small pile to check for potency?

Maybe its just wet with naptha still. I'll test it again in the morning but I dont think this is the case.

Hi Darkbb,

Salt cannot go to the naphtha; salt just won't dissolve at all in non-polar solvents. Have you tested dmt before from other extractions? dmt tends to give a burning sensation on the tongue that may vaguely resemble "salty". Did you also taste the salt you used afterward for comparison?

I think that yes, you should leave your product to dry a bit more and that you shouldn't be afraid of salt contamination, just smoke it and enjoy!

yes you hit it right on. now that i'm not half asleep at 4 in the morning it does resemble salt. No i have never done a dmt extraction before this is my first. My jar of concentrated naptha-dmt is in the freezer right now i plan on leaving it there for a day or two then my extraction will be complete and i'll post picture of my success.

Adding salt to the water and heating up the naphtha will make DMT far more soluble in the naphtha.

Another thing adding salt can do is force other non DMT molecules into the naphtha that wouldn’t normally go into the naphtha. Salt raises the polarity of the water and by doing so, DMT is less soluble in the water, but so are many other things. This is why it can help to break emulsions. Certain compounds are soluble in both water and naphtha, but when adding salt, that increases the polarity and tends to make those compounds less soluble in the water and more likely to be pushed out of the water into the naphtha. For some plant extractions this will break emulsions, for others it will cause emulsions.

Bottom line: adding salt makes fewer things soluble in the water layer, pushing more compounds into the naphtha including DMT and many other compounds. This can be both a good and a bad thing. It all depends on how this technique is used.
