When to use coffe filters?

Migrated topic.

So SWIM just started his first extraction! He was thinking about using DMSO tincture when all was completed so it was important to him that the spice be pure.
With the STB tek or other teks i hear of people taking the naptha (in swims case ronsonol) and filtering it with a coffee filter into the crystalizing container. Is that right? So that the spice would be pure and hopefully white instead of yellow? Wouldnt this take some of the spice too? do people smoke the coffee filter after it dries? This sounds like bad mojo to me.
Yellow spice i am sure is not to bad for SWIM to make into fumaric snuff, to make pharmausca or tincture right?

Sorry for such newb questions.
Thanks.

Sounds like a reasonable plan.

however, if you don't see any plant material in your naphtha it might just be a waste of time.

I've heard of using a coffee filter to catch stray precipitate AFTER precipitation. Apparently they just kinda scrape it together in the filter and dump it out into the rest of the crystals.

My first precip I got all floaties and no crystals. In the end it kinda worked out since all the spice was the same. No varriants in density from crystal to crystal. I just used a t-shirt over a large 2 gallon jar.

I pipette carefully and roll the jar around carefully so stuff sticks to the edge. Or if I have really stubborn floaters a very slow pour into another suitable container will leave much spice in the jar.

I hate scraping spice off of filters that's for sure.

I only use filters when I actually want to lose some hard matter.

I had no problems with swishing the naptha slowly around the edges to get a floatie to stick to the sides. Using Pyrex dishes for my freezing with wide bases make this easier. I usually have 1-2 floaties max and if you really dont wanna mess with it, just pour it back into the solution jar and you WILL pull it again. I also reuse the same pyrex dish and I dont completely clean it out so forming and growing crystals with a left over spice in the bottem helps avoid floaties.

I think in 20+ freezes I have had 3-5 floaties total.
