My reasoning was universal, I personally think buddhism woud be more benign in the west than Christianity has been (itself an Eastern religion in origin of course, Middle Eastern to be precise). But why have either, let's do something better...

It's pretty obvious I'm stating my opinion there. I'm sorry if I've offended you, but if you're scared of people criticising your religion then maybe you don't have enough 'faith'.
And I've read the entire bible cover to cover (have you? I've yet to meet a Christian who has), as well as some of the deemed 'heretical' gospels like Thomas's, and as well as being taught all the BS that isn't actually in the bible since birth. The original Christians were alright- nice anarcho-communists- and Jesus was a dude. The rest are in general a horrific mass of hypocrisy (sounds stangely familiar to what Jesus said about his own religion at the time). My reading on bhuddhism isn't so extensive, but from what I've read and seen their followers are preferable. So I really don't need to read any more, I have more fruitful intellectual avenues to follow.
