Can harmalas cause insomnia?

I had a low dose last night (or, tbh, early this morning - I got a bit carried away listening to music after @benzyme's stream!) along with a 2 mL tester of 'TnT' mim tincture and slept like a baby - I woke up screaming, and wanted boobies - actually I slept a solid 7 hours and the dreams were weird enough, but not such that they actually woke me up. Because I only got to drink the first brew of my Saturday night 3.33 g, this was the 2nd - 5th brews of that and a couple of other batches. 5 brews will exhaust ground or crushed seeds to the extent there's absolutely no point in doing a sixth one, btw. Chances are this wasn't enough to really activate the mim, but the dose there was likely at the micro end of the scale anyhow.

The fun bit is that I told a joke in the dream which I actually remember:
what do you call someone who works at a very busy ice cream stand?

Does it also affect your sleep in any way, such as causing insomnia, like the OP mentioned?
Most of the time yeah, especially with higher amounts, if i take more than 7-8g even in the morning i will very likely not get a good nights sleep that day, ive tried alot of different herbs/plants that can help insomnia but none of them did anything except for blue lotus, it seems to directly target the cause of the rue stimulation ime, but i dont like the after effects of blue lotus tbh, mugwort works but only once or twice, if i keep taking it it will stop working, kava also helps but not consistently, you can try valerian, chamomile, lemon balm, cloves, magnesium, they all somwhat help but they dont instantly fix it ime.

I think lower amounts are not a big issue for insomnia, they are mostly abit relaxing, it is at higher amounts that the stimulant effect overrides the sedative effect, ime.

I decided to have some (roasted) Rue yesterday after not having much the past year. I had 3/4tsp of powdered rue (guessing around 2-3g), added to three cups of tea at 1/4tsp per cup. I had the first cup in the afternoon, the second cup in the evening, and the third cup at night.

All three cups had a mild, calming effect, but seemed to also have a cumulative effect, as I really started to feel the rue while going to sleep and in the hours that followed. Overall, it definitely seemed to have a negative impact on my sleep, causing weird/uncomfortable hypnogogic states, broken sleep, and feverish dreams.

Yet, despite the poor night of sleep, I’d say that I’m feeling better than average today, in terms of calmness and clarity. Perhaps, it’s just my imagination, based on past experiences of higher doses and what I’ve read on this forum, but it does seem like the rue cleansed my mind of some built up stress and negativity.

Conversely, I know from experience that more isn’t always better, as heavier rue journeys in the past have left me feeling out of balance and taking days to recover. In any case, I hope to take higher doses again, but will try to avoid taking rue later in the evening to mitigate what I experience as its negative effects on sleep at low doses and up.

Taking rue in the morning is always better, not just because of sleep, but the actual experience is different, when i take rue at night i often feel off and out of balance like you mentioned, but if i take it in the morning i always feel amazing and ready for whatever life has to offer.

Good call, I’ll probably aim to take a higher dose in the morning next time, rather than taking the low doses spread out over the day. While there’s obviously something to be said for dropping everything and tripping all day, that’s not what I want to be doing most weekends, so I’m interested in seeing how high I can go on the rue while still staying functional. For example, yesterday I spent the day cleaning, cooking, meditating, and doing yoga, which I would typically prefer to being layed out with eye shades, but again for everything there’s a season, or something haha

Yeah taking it all at once is better than spreading out over the day ime, when i take it in the morning the main experience lasts about 5-6 hours, but there is a beautiful afterglow that lasts until the next day, spreading it throughout the day ruins it ime.

Learn the rue state well, and you won't have to drop anything, the key imo is aligning the rue state with your baseline, If you really want to get the most out of rue, try to master lower doses first, after a while when low doses become fully functional and feel just like a cup of coffee, then you can really get the most out of those higher doses and discover the magic it has to offer.
