Hello,

I currently take Zyrtec-D 12 hour twice a day for my allergies. Zyrtec-D contains (Cetirizine HCI - 5 mg Antihistamine , Pseudoephedrine HCI - 120 mg Nasal Decongestant). I have read online that one should not take antihistamines and dxm together. Therefore, I have stopped taking Zyrtec-D for 24 hours. What is everyone's opinion on this? Is it safe for me to trip on DXM?

Antihistamines have some anticholinergic effects which can be hazardous with DXM, although cetirizine putatively has less anticholinergic effects than some others.

I dont think taking pseudoepehdrine regularly for allergies is wise;if you use this for more than 7-10 days on the trot, on stopping it you will get rebound nasal congestion.

Thank you for your reply corpus callosum. I am currently trying to end my dependency on Zyrtec-D because of the many harms of continued use. If you were in my situation would you take DXM?

I personally wouldnt take DXM whilst on a cetirizine/pseudoephedrine combination, nor would I advise anyone that they should. However, if I stopped the 'allergy' med and had been off off it for a few days and I felt the need for some lonnng dissociation then perhaps I might. The half life for both cetirizine and pseudoephedrine is around 8-9 hours so 5 days off it should be unproblematic.
