Evaping hexane... Problem!

Migrated topic.

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to ask a quick question to hexane users, after doing a extraction using hexane and evaping it, i still noticed the hexane smell ( like tipex ), i tried to let it evap all the nigh and still the same smell, also with CFC + evap i still notice that smell...

The thing is that i made a joint with this dmt and it taste just sooooo bad, just like smoking hexane, and i stopped smoking inmediately because i know its very toxic.

After doing 3 extractions all of them, evaporated ones and freezed ones, smell like hexane.

I dont know what to do and im very worried, can anyone tell a good way to take of the hexane from the dmt? Perhaps a very long evaporating process? ( one night didnt do the job )

i think you are supposted to wash it with acetone, ive read this some were but dont remember were. fasa rings a bell too? mayb search for these two things wile your waiting in limbo for a big wig :p

I used hexane, no heptane or bestine, i used this method: http://psicoactividad.underave.net/recetas/extraccion-de-dmt-a-partir-de-mimosa-hostilis/
The author of that tech says that hexane works much better than naphta, because of that i used it instead of naphta ( wich is easyer and cheaper to find here in Spain )

I have already did what you said of putting the dmt in a pyrex dish and dry it there, but still the same smell ( perhaps a little bit less smell ).

I would do a recristalization but i dont want cleaner crystals, i just want hexane off.

Thanks for the info mistmann, but now i can't afford any more chemical materials.

I will keep the pyrex dish with the fan this night too and ill wait to see if hexane goes, but if not, i want to ask two things:

Its soo bad to smoke dmt with hexane? i think that yes and that it is a very stupid question, but im just soo upset

Anyway to avoid this in a further extraction? ill keep using hexane, is the only solvent i have

Many thanks for the help!

If it is unadulterated (no additives) hexane, it should evaporate quickly and cleanly with no after odors. I have used it a lot and that is my experience with it. However, besides just allowing evaporation I chop up the white powder and spread out to dry again to allow any trapped solvent to be exposed to air and to evaporate.

So... do you have crystals? And they still smell like hexane?

if so... you either need to wait it out and see if it goes away with thorough evap or redissolve your crystals in acetone, IPA or ethanol. When that evap it should smell less, but you may need to do it a few times to get rid of all the hexane.

I know acetone was already suggested...but thats just the way it is. Maybe the IPA or ethanol are already in the house.

In the future, I would suggest you use d-limo, xylene or toluene. They grab MUCH more goodies than hexane or heptane. Hot Naptha is tried and true as well...but you will still be leaving behind some spice.

@Guille...!

There is something very strange. The only reason that comes to mind is that your hexane is dirty. Are you absolutely sure that the odor you smell is that of hexane?

I use both hexane and heptane. After freeze-precip and pouring off remaining solvent I dry the spice with a fan on low. The solvent smell disappears WITHIN MINUTES, especially with hexane that is much more volatile than heptane. I use reagent grade solvents and never had a problem like yours. Check your hexane. See if it evaporates completely on a clean glass surface and leaves no stains. Smell that glass. If the odor is still there, you got a problem with hexane quality.
