Hello everyone,

I got this "Harmal Extract - Peganum harmala" thing recently [MOD EDIT - NO SOURCING] for a first pharmahuasca,
It says extract 8:1
I tried 200mg to 2g of it progressively and felt nothing, then 45min later, took 50mg of good DMT (freebase + lemon => DMT citrate) orally, it did nothing too.
I expected at least nausea and other things from Harmalas at some point (I tried avoided tyramine foods beforehand).
I tried a Harmalas extraction (Harmalas Extraction and Separation Guide - DMT-Nexus Wiki) on this product but got no precipitate / color change with lye

I guess it's just an utterly shitty product, what would you do to test it ? (it's my first time with harmalas)
Also does it get really dangerous with tyramine ?

Thanks for your precious help, love

This isn't a science paper.

Moved to the harmala discussion section (check the forum sections carefully!)

These "extracts" seem universally to be totally crap. Get seeds, do it yourself.

The tyramine thing is generally overstated in the case of RIMAs like harmala but some individuals may be more sensitive. The caution still absolutely applies to irreversible MAOIs, of course.

Thanks for moving the post (didn't manage) and for your nice answer
Hope it can help others not buying harmala extracts
It could be confirmation bias, or self-selection or whatever we'd call it, but every single mention of "third party" syrian rue extract I've seen here on the Nexus, and virtually all of the caapi extracts, too, has been from someone asking why it doesn't work.

An extract won't necessarily have targeted the alkaloids we're interested in, or improper storage could have led to their degradation. Lack of a precipitate with NaOH says it all, really.

Easy test is to dissolve it in slightly acidic water and precipitate it with some alkali. Harmala alkaloids precipitate as light brown material and settle at the bottom. Rue alkaloids are very visible immediately, it's hard to miss visually. Caapi alkaloids are more difficult to see, but they still collect at the bottom after some time.

It's unlikely that you can see anything like this during your test as these paste extracts are probably all crap and have no effect ( = do not contain desired alkaloids)

Are you saying you bought some harmalas, then tried to do an extraction on them? If its some kind of paste, to purify the alkaloids, boil the paste in ethyl alcohol until most or all of it dissolves, then allow to cool down slowly, crystals will appear, those crystals are pure alkaloids.
