First STB extraction - white & yellow crystals

The vial on the right contains almost pure white snow with a hint of yellow. After reusing the same naphtha and applying some heat for subsequent pulls SWIM obtained the waxier yellow crystals on the left. The crystals were freeze precipitated with a single freezer-countertop-freezer cycle then dried using a furnace vent (hot dry air). SWIM noticed some oily liquid which did not evaporate and may be partly responsible for the yellow color.

SWIM is planning to do a recrystallization by mixing all the spice together with just enough clean, heated naphtha to dissolve everything, then separating the naphtha layer from any impurity layer and freeze-cycling to form thicker crystals. Will the recrystallization help to remove the yellow impurities, or will it just spread them to all the crystals? Is it possible that SWIM applied too much heat & air, forming some N-Oxide which would be inseparable from pure N,N?
 
LOL, no kidding.

SWIM returned the Al tainted shit(which he wishes he noticed before purchasing), and found a soap maker supply. 500g which is a bit better for SWIMS needs and 99% pure NaOH :) All that is missing is the MHRB which seems to have got lost in the mail and is being re-shipped..... No comment
 
Im sorry for hi-jacking your thread with all SWIMS questions, but it truly helps, and is a good resource.

One more question before SWIM is ready:

Is 1g-Lye:1g-MHRB:15ml-H2O a good ratio?
 
I have seen good results with double the MHRB as above, so 1g-Lye:2g-MHRB:15ml-H2O. This gives a nice, slightly goopy mixture that will have a high concentration of DMT, which makes the naphtha pulls more efficient and allows the freeze-precip to work better. For each g of lye, 1 mL naphtha seems to work well. To simplify pulls, it's best to use a narrower container that will make the naphtha layer thick enough to separate without getting any water/lye droplets in your naphtha collection jar.

Some have recommended adding a layer of pure NaCl rock salt to prevent formation of emulsions.

If you don't trust my numbers you could take a survey of people's STB extraction experiences in every forum (this one, shroomery, etc) and take an average for the ratios to use. Everyone seems to have a different preference and I have not personally experimented with varying the ratios.

A plastic jug will be mostly unaffected by lye.

As for the pulls, I'm not entirely sure of the best method. Try at least 1 pull without heating and see how it goes, then compare it with a heated pull.

It's very important not to mix it too vigorously once you add the naphtha, but you also want the maximum surface contact between the naphtha and bark/lye/water to transfer the highest amount of goodies.

What ratio did your swim use? Swim is thinking about trying 1.5g lye : 2g mhrb : 15ml H20

SWIM used 1g lye : 2g MHRB : 15 ml H2O . This is plenty of lye and adding more will not improve the extraction.

I would recommend using 1.5 g MHRB in the above ratio to give a slightly more watery mixture that is easier to manage and less likely to emulsify.

so, final recommendation:
1g lye : 1.5 g MHRB : 15 ml H2O

+ a few tablespoons rock salt if available
 
Do you have any recommendations as to how long I should let it soak in the NaOH? I was told this by an Enlightened member:

"At pH of 13-14 will probably destroy DMT if it’s left at that pH for too long. A pH of even 12 will destroy 5-HO-DMT and 4-HO-DMT if they are exposed to it for several hours."

I was thinking 3 hours before the first extract and then waiting 24 hours before the next one. Whats your opinion?

Yes indeed, SWIM finished his first pull last night, And wow, all I can say is SWIM is very happy with his results.

don't worry about that. Its just that I have heard SWIM say that he left basified sludge sitting for many months, and still managed to extract some top grade spice from it, doing naptha pulls every month or so.
 
Does anyone know if CVS's Brand of Drain Opener will be safe as a basefying solution. It has lye and sodium carbonate as listed ingredients. Sorry I do not have a picture of it but it, it actual is in the middle of this picture http://iheartcvs.com/trippin/uploaded_images/img400-737952.jpg

I hope someone reads this since it is not in a seperate thread. SWIM HAS ALL HIS MATERIALS HE IS IN HIS FINAL STAGES OF PLANNING. SWIM has decided he will make a pictoral helping thread to show processes and end result
