HI - I'm a bit of a newbie to Vape pens. I've been following this TEK to the T.
and getting ok results. The problem is the vape hits taste awful, my lips go numb and my throat burns. pretty sure it's the NAPTHA residue. how do I avoid this? thank you

If the naphta you used successfully passed the evaporation test and if you took time to evaporate it properly, harshness could as well be related to inappropriate voltage settings from your vape pen or d-juice ratios rather than naphta residue. Numb lips are not uncommon and might be related to alkalinity of the vapor/aerosol.
Obviously follow @The Sofa Traveler 's advice above, also get into the habit of Putting the vape tip properly into your mouth 'past the lips' rather than 'on the lips', the amount of times i melted my lips when i first started was silly! Doh! 
You can also experiment with the speed of inhale, if the wattage is high breath faster, if the wattage is low breath slower, if you have no control over wattage on your vape experiment with different speed breaths. If you have a vape with Air-flow control experiment with different settings, there is usually an air intake that can be set.

thank you for taking the time to respond. The metallic taste is so horrible I know something is way off. I thought maybe it was the vape cartridge. I'm new to extracting and new to the vape pen world. I think I'm operating the vape pen correctly, it's just the horrible chemical taste. I tried smoking just the powder too and I could taste the naptha but didn't taste the crazy strong metal taste. I wasted a bunch attempting to smoke just the crystals. it's .333 parts Vape Juice to 1g DMT and I only had .5g DMT so i put very little vape juice in there. could smoking vape pen with very little juice in it create that horrible metallic taste? thanks for responding.
One piece of good advice I was given when I started with Vaping was to try Vaping just the Juice with no DMT in it so you get the hang of the device before wasting DMT, I learned not to burn the coils, played with the airflow settings and wattage, it took some practice for me to keep the vapour in my lungs at first too. You don't want to immediately cough out the good stuff.
