Kombucha

Migrated topic.
Oh, come on now, minxx... an adventurous girl like yourself? You're honestly saying you're freaked out by a little kombucha mucous?? I love me a nice juicy hunk of phlegm in my GT Dave's gingerberry!

Looking for an update here - has anyone experienced bad results with a combination of kombucha and MAOIs? Kombucha may well contain tyramine, and though everyone says "harmalines are reversible MAOIs so it's not as proscribed", that sounds a bit vague to me. No need to avoid tyramine at all? What is meant by "not as bad"?

Thanks.

I've been brewing kombucha for quite some time now.

I would be a bit concerned about fermented drinks and maoi's but it's probably not that big of a deal with rimas.

I have found that if you use kombucha to extract woods with anti-microbial properties (like ayahuasca has) it has a detrimental effect on the kombucha culture.

I found the best way to work with these types of woods in kombucha is to brew them with the original tea mixture and just culture it all together from the beginning.

This is exactly what I'm wondering about - the mild warning. What's the risk, exactly? Nausea? I ask because I just had a whole bottle of kombucha now and may smoke some 20x caapi tonight, and may drink a caapi-only brew tomorrow, both for the first time.

With non-reversible maoi's, effects of interaction can range from headache to hypertensive crisis. This is not as much of a concern with rima's but should still be taken into account and extreme caution should be exercised when treading these waters

The exact mechanism by which tyramine causes a hypertensive reaction is not well understood, but it is assumed that tyramine displaces norepinephrine from the storage vesicles. This may trigger a cascade in which excessive amounts of norepinephrine can lead to a hypertensive crisis. Another theory suggests that proliferation and accumulation of catecholamines causes hypertensive crisis.

I really liked kombucha at first and drank it daily for a while. I soon started to realize it felt sort of toxic to my system so I stopped drinking it completely. I dont know why my body reacts that way to it but for me it is just not agreeable. I know others though that swear by it for the probiotics. Too much apple cider vinegar effects me the same way so it is probabily just an individual reaction my body has..maybe it's too acidic I dunno.

I eat cultured foods with harmalas and never worry about it and have never had problems..I have eaten like a jar of sour kraut and then drank ayahuasca and been fine. I used to get paranoid about interaction but so far it has not happened. I think if you dont know how you personally will respond then you should use caution.

i did a search for kombucha here because of a recent experience with caapi alks.

now it could be that my latest batch of extracted caapi is stronger that usual, but i dont think so.

i have taken 200-210mg with cannabis and a beer many times, and find it very pleasant- even energizing.

this time was different:

they were offering kombucha at a show, and it sounded much better than a beer, so i drank a glass, yum. my next thought was *-do not drink alcohol-* this is 30 minutes after eating 200mg caapi.

you know the feeling kombucha has on the stomach--its nice. the caapi was coming on strong, and everything was intensified. i got a bit anxious, and a few spliffs with friends helped. i did feel the need to sit down, i was a bit worn out/tired anyway. it felt good, and relaxing was easy. at one point i felt that if i closed my eyes, i would be tripping, and could give way to cev's, but was not in proper setting to entertain that notion.:)

all in all, the combo was nice, i would def take less caapi if i knew i was going to drink kombucha. there seems some sort of synergy, it did not feel toxic.
