Partner's dad and Terence?!

So... I was listening to some old Terence Mckenna tapes, and my partner's dad is on a few of them. He even introduces Terence once, and at one point mentions how Terence changed his life. I asked her if she knew her dad knew Terence Mckenna, and she said yeah, he mentions Terence from time to time; why? Do I know Terence too? Well, I replied, he's kinda famous. Oh.

Anyway, I REALLY want to talk to this fellow, because obviously we have much to discuss. I'm in love with his daughter, for Christ's sake, do you just walk up to him and start talking about psychedelics? HOW THE HELL DO YOU APPROACH THE SUBJECT? First off, she only gets to see him rarely, and I don't think she realizes what friendship with Terence Mckenna means. And she's been abroad for a year, so she doesn't fully know how interested I am psychedelics, either.

Anybody have any ideas of what to do?!

A similar situation came up recently, too, when my best friend's dad was walking around in a Terence Mckenna t-shirt. Psychedelics are NOT an open topic in that household, how the hell to broach the subject?

I'd start with something like: "Well im very interested in how the mind works, consciousness and stuff like this". And then gauge his reaction.

I would work it gently to be honest. I dont want to sound weird, but I would keep the knowledge to yourself, and maybe throw a hint or two out there every now and again. If you have a psychedelic book, if and when you meet him, you should be reading it blatenly.

Just gently roll into the subject. Just because psychs arent discussed doesnt mean they arent there. for all you know he could be in his study smoking some of mckenna's orange dmt!

Yeah, and who knows? He may be hiding some secrets from his family, especially since it sounds like he's only mentioned Terence casually, saying TM changed his life, without reference to what Terence talks about. This has the potential for some genuine bonding experiences!

Thanks, guys! Sly mention of the crumpling of a plastic bread wrapper would be a good hint to throw out. Or use of my uber-suave Terence impression; then again, THAT could backfire. I've been seriously considering a t-shirt, as they are, after all, guaranteed to "help identify the others".

It's kind of ironic that there are Terence t-shirts. When he talked about identifying the others he usually cracked a joke about how the last thing we need is a Terence cult. And now there're t-shirts.

The t-shirt sounds like a good way to get him to take notice and initiate a conversation.
