Because wild
Phalaris strains aren't standardized, alkaloid profiles can swing dramatically. Working with unknown wild material makes accurate dosing tricky, mostly due to massive variations in 5-MeO-DMT concentration.
Acute Overdose Risk vs. Grazing Toxicosis
A 70 kg sheep eats ~2.1 kg of dry grass daily. In a medium-to-high alkaloid
P. aquatica strain (assuming ~0.2% 5-MeO-DMT), that daily biomass contains
4.2 grams of pure 5-MeO-DMT.
- An active smoked dose of 5-MeO-DMT is roughly 5–15 milligrams.
- The daily sheep equivalent contains enough active alkaloid to cause death in dozens of people.
"Phalaris staggers" in grazing livestock is a chronic neurotoxic condition caused by long-term mass ingestion of whole plant material. Human harm from extracts, by contrast, is an
acute overdose threat—it takes only a microscopic dosing error in crude home extracts to move from a sub-threshold effect to dangerous toxicity.
A Note on Gramine
You cannot distinguish alkaloids like gramine and 5-MeO-DMT by smell, color, or appearance.
Gramine's acute toxicity at low milligram doses (e.g., in a typical 20 mg extract sample) is generally low, and its risks are sometimes exaggerated in online discussions. However, it remains an unwanted plant toxin that offers zero recreational value. While a few milligrams won't suddenly kill you, there is no reason to ingest it, and inhaling crude plant extracts carrying unpredictable alkaloid mixes is poor practice. Aim for strains with low gramine profiles whenever possible.
Breeding Line Status
In our labs we work on high DMT / 5-MeO-DMT
P. aquatica strains for psychedelic use but it will not be broadly accessible until at least Summer 2027.
Field Testing Update (P. arundinacea)
We evaluated wild
P. arundinacea samples across North America, Scandinavia, Central, and Eastern Europe. Wild profiles showed surprising homogeneity:
- ~90% present 5-MeO-NMT as the primary alkaloid.
- ~5% present NMT as the primary alkaloid.
- ~5% present gramine as the primary alkaloid.
- Trace levels only for DMT and 5-MeO-DMT.
For anyone analyzing or working with these plants,
P. aquatica remains the primary species of focus, though its high 5-MeO-DMT concentrations require extreme caution regarding potency and dose calculation.
