Question about 5-MeO-DMT

I found 5-meo to be dysphoric at low, moderate, and moderately high doses. Alien feeling.
DMT can be euphoric once you get over the initial fear. 5-meo is dysphoric even with repeated administrations, lower doses, no matter what you do. At high doses the idea of euphoria or dysphoria is irrelevant.

Answering to what you say in your first lines about N,N-DMT and some people thinking it's weird : I have seen many people unable to go hard enough. N,N-DMT can leave you in a weird place, almost out of the trip, not really in and not really there either. You then just experience an undescriptive physical push and it can be very unpleasant. Those people I have seen feeling and thinking it's weird changed their mind entirely when they finally jumped in and, for some, broke through.
5-MeO-DMT can be an absolutely fantastic experience, but I struggle to talk about it in a concise and meaningful way. I go back and forth on whether it should be compared at all to N,N-DMT. I’ve been wanting to write down my thoughts on 5-MeO-DMT for sometime now, and since this thread starts off asking about a comparison to N,N-DMT I’m going to seize this opportunity:

In my psychedelic community I know very few people that are in love with N,N-DMT the way I am and often when I say that my favorite substance is DMT they assume I am talking about 5-MeO-DMT, and I’ve heard many people say their best or most meaningful experience has been with it. Yet, their experience with N,N-DMT if they’ve even tried it is reported as weird or that it just doesn’t work for them. My take on that is that N,N-DMT is coming to them in an informal way, is rather difficult to dose properly and they’ve quit trying before getting it right, whereas with 5-MeO-DMT they are getting it in a retreat setting with proper guidance and having a quality experience right away.

The name, the administration, the onset, and to some extent the after-glow are similar. 5-MeO-DMT is something like 5X as potent, so weighing out a dose is more complicated since our commonly used mg scales aren’t that accurate when 1 or 2mgs matter. But on the plus side, breathing in the low dosage of vapor is easier.

Both substances take you somewhere you likely never imagined and return you with likely more questions than you had 10 minutes before, but the experiences are distinctly different. Both bring up questions. But, where N,N-DMT causes me to question reality and how my senses perceive it, 5-MeO-DMT makes me question what it means just to exist. (I hope that makes sense.)

I’m a curious person so both of them showing me some weirdness is what I find terrific. Both trips are indescribable, and yet I still try with whoever is around to listen. With N,N-DMT, an hour after I’m back I pretty much return to my normal thoughts and may just remember bits and pieces of the trip. It’s much like waking up from a dream. With 5-MeO-DMT I return kind of mentally shattered and it takes a day or two to recover. I think this is why 5-MeO-DMT seems to be more popular with the therapy retreats (at least in my area).

That idea of being shattered is how I can best describe it. I’m propelled into nothingness (sort of like general anaesthetic). That is completely unlike N,N-DMT where all my senses have something going on and there is some magical distortion of my mental mapping. With 5-MeO-DMT I black out and from there I start to reassemble. Bit by bit things start to return. I’m aware of vision. With my eyes closed all there is vast darkness, but somehow its in my vision. At some point I hear again, I realize I can speak, memories come back, I open my eyes and start to figure out who I am and where I’ve been. (It seems like memories come back one by one, and this may be where the therapy opportunities comes in as I feel I have some choice in what I care to remember.) I go into nothingness, completely alone and the return itself is what it is all about. With N,N-DMT I go to a place I enjoy with structure, color, motion, beings/entities that welcome me, and I return as if I’ve been on vacation. A completely different type of trip.

Weirdest thing about 5-MeO-DMT though, for me, is having my wife tell me that during the time I was in the blacked-out nothingness phase, I actually move around, speak coherently to her, and am able to respond to her reassuring me that I’m alright. That is so disconnected from what I thought I was experiencing, and not at all what happens on N,N-DMT. If you are doing 5-MeO-DMT, I think it wise to have a tripsitter.

Take care and enjoy both – they offer incredible experiences.

Oh man. Thank you for this one.

I have had many breakthroughs with NN dmt and one with 5-MeO-DMT. The 5-MeO was with (within) Bufo, in Mexico.

It was the most incredibly spirtual event of my life, but it something so far different than regular DMT.

I wish there was less conflation of the two terms - they are like complete opposites.

One is a constructor (DMT) and one is a deconstructor (5-MeO). One is everything, the other is kind of.. nothing.

Some call it a death simulation.

5-MeO takes all your connection to earth and existance and severs it, and you become like a soul that is blasting thru the universe. I also found it very eastern. It can also be quite physical. I have a writeup on it if anyone would ever care to read it.

I have not tried 5-MeO directly, or either in small doses. I think my Bufo dose was too large honestly. It took me many days to really work with it to remember it at all.

Personally I find nn to be more intresting. You can do it and then go out for dinner after, with a smile on your face, just baffled and astonished..

NN is like the worlds greatest toy. 5-MeO seems like it could be the worlds greatest teacher.

NN also inspires simulation theory type thoughts, while 5-MeO is far more of a spirtual god molecule.

I wouldn't separate both experiences that clearly. The literature and reports show they often overlap.

One big huge 5-MeO-DMT trip compared to lots of DMT experimentation is not necessarily a fair assessment.

I get it that it’s a different experience, but it’s never been so different for me that I don’t still feel somewhat similar to how I do on other tryptamines…just with much stonger ego dissolution as part of the experience.

I'm sure this is a massive oversimplification, but to borrow the biochemistry for a metaphor, it's as if the balance of 5HT receptor agonism tips strongly towards 1A for 5-MeO-DMT and 2A for DMT. But ultimately, both receptors are involved when using either substance, just in differing (and somewhat polar opposite) ratios. There is undoubtedly shades of experience in each substance that can be found in the other if you know what you're looking for.

Would you say that you have a harder time translating your 5-MeO-DMT into words without betraying the experience VS N,N-DMT or even LSD ?
I'd say that the 5-MeO-DMT experience is a bit easier to describe because it's more about feelings and that's something I've got everyday practice trying, whereas with N,N-DMT my senses, especially visual, are so weirdly distorted that I've got nothing to compare it to.

I jumped into this discussion because I don't think the two substances should be compared based on superficial similarities like name or dosing method. When things get compared, one is inevitably deemed to be better than the other in someones opinion. Here they are just too different.

I got my hands on a sample of 5-MeO-DMT some 2 year before I got up the courage to try it. Most of my fear was from reading comparisons between the two, and the words used to describe a 5-MeO-DMT trip often struck me as more extreme.

"because it's more about feelings and that's something I've got everyday practice trying".

Nice way to put it.

Yes ! 5-MeO showed me nonduality. Duality = comparison. It showed me, sadly, that in adult life (after chidhood) so much is THIS vs THAT.

God it showed me so many things but it took a long time for me to bring it all to the surface.

I knew nothing about eastern philosphy but it seemd to really show me a lot of that.

Yeah, in terms of headspace, 5-MeO-DMT is very similar to deep meditative states I've experienced. But the body load is much less pleasurable – too much constriction in the upper chest with labored breathing and pounding heartbeat. IME.

I don't think it's fair to compare the psychological effects between these two substances.
