The exponential growth of DMT use?

I'm interested in a few opinions on the popularity of DMT, why that could be and what implications it has. My interest in this was spiked by 3 music festivals I have been to this summer. By chance at each festival I was camping near, and for a few hours hung out with, some guys who were about 10 years younger than me. (3 different groups, all about university age)

I was really impressed by their knowledge on substances in general, but especially on DMT. When I was their age, very, very few people had even heard of DMT. If these groups were anything to go on, then most young people who are into recreational drugs have heard of, and many have used spice.

I didn't ask any of them at the time - but is this just down to internet use and the "Joe Rogan effect", or is there a bigger movement going on? Is it a good thing that it is apparently becoming so common (at least in the UK). Do any people of that age care to comment on how they found spice?

I personally first heard of it through word of mouth about 10 years ago, but never thought I would have access to any. It was only by chance reading up on cultivating cacti that I found a tek on erowid.com

Any opinions?
 
Well...I first heard about dmt listening to McKenna my sophomore year of college, while driving back to my campus after dropping my then GF off at her campus. I had downloaded a bunch of McKenna talks from some drug torrent and hadnt listened to any of them. I had my ipod on shuffle and one of his talks came on. I was floored as I listened to his stoned ape hypothesis and his descriptions of DMT. I pretty much assumed that it would be years and years and years before I would ever encounter the molecule. I got home and did some very basic research, finding QT's tek and a few other mentions of it, but largely forgetting about it (I was much more focused on mushrooms at the time and figured that DMT would take a while to find me). The teks I was able to find at the time led me to believe I would not be able to have a go at it.

About a year and a half later I had my first dmt experience and immediately after that I ordered all my stuff online. I found a pictorial by Shirley Knott on the Shroomery that was according to Marsofolds Tek and I had great success. In the time between first hearing about it and trying it I did a ton of research and reading on DMT and ayahuasca and even wrote several papers for school from both anthropological and legal viewpoints. Word of the molecule is definitely spreading. Something that is this profound and so easy to extract? I mean...how could it not spread at an exponential rate?
 
Well I'm 22 and I first heard about dmt about 7 or 8 years ago. I didnt persue any more knowledge on it. Then I heard joe rogan live on opie and anthony [satelite radio]. That really peaked my interest and I decided if I found any around town id try it but I again didn't persue any more knowledge. P.s. I live in las vegas and never found any from a reliable source. Vegas=parties/drugs wtf

Then I hit that "is this all there is in life" point and decided I needed to explore my consciousness. First read about lsa then cactus and stumbled onto dmt. Well the rest is history. :d

Still 99.9 percent of people I talk with about dmt(outside the nexus lol) either never heard of it or know almost nothing of the subject. I try to enlighten them about it. :twisted:
 
In the past year or so i've heard it brought up in completely random circumstances by random people.. Two times this year so far. I'd be in a random place with people that you would never expect to bring up the topic, then all of a sudden..

"Hey, have any of you guys heard of this chemical that shows you another reality!?"

"Hey, have you heard of this 'death drug'?"

I just shook my head n' said "uhh nope, why whats it supposed to do!?" Hehe, (as i sit there with my convincing inquisitive look.) :)
 
By music festivals you mean electronic music festivals? If so, don't be so surprised. I would say 90% of people that go to electronic music festivals know about DMT and I know of at least 2 popular DJ's by the name of D.M.T (that without mentioning ALL the classic tracks by Posford and 1200 mics, etc). And let's not even talk about the darkpsy genre... In the music scene, I don't think Joe Rogan has anything to do with the popularization of DMT. I think Terence McKenna is the one that really popularized DMT, both in the music scene and the other circles.

Of course hippies knew about DMT, but I think that they were pretty quiet about it because, as someone said before here, computer technology wasn't really there to aid the descriptions as it is today... and then you have to add the power of the Internet. I mean, In a sense there is an exponential popularization of everything. Now, lets see what happens when the documentaries hit the net. That will be interesting.

No, that's the interesting thing. The psytrance movement has always been at the boundaries in terms of drug use (IMO - don't flame me!!) :lol: These were largely main stream events I was at. There was electronic music on, for sure, but it wasn't a foot stomping dread lock waving affair by a long way. These were regular kids doing regular things going to regular universities.
 
A friend mentioned DMT to me about 3 years ago, but neither of us had tried it. I had limited access to the internet at the time so very little research was done on my part.. meanwhile my friend was well on his way to getting his first extracton done.
One day I received a rather frantic phonecall from my mate saying he had just sampled the spice... he must have literally dropped back in because none of it really made sense, but his excitement alone was enough to spark my interest in it even further. After reading up and listening to all the usuall suspects I told my frind I was ready to try it.

I blew me away... more so than any other experience I've ever had, psychedelic or not. It was just wow!

A couple months later I would venture in again courtesy of my good friend, a couple months after that I done my own extractions... the rest is history.

I myself have let 7 level headed people try the spice, one loved it, the rest enjoyed it... one had a tough time with it, but was glad they did it.

When I first extracted I was shocked at how easy it is... I mean A,B,C-DMT. why the whole planet wasn't onto this I did not know.
 
An intense interest in mushrooms and music brought me to DMT.
It all started when i also heard a Terrence Mckenna lecture talking about DMT.
I think it was an Art Bell interview with him that set the ball rolling.
I remember one distinct moment in terrence's talk where it clicked and realized i had to try it somehow some way.
I did some research and realized it was possible to make it.

I found out about DMT while researching Alien contact with Ancient civilizations, ( I know = NERD ) the reports of "entity contact" kept popping up and was intriguing to say the least , I quickly put it together that this was the famed Ayahuasca I had read about for years while studying PreColumbian and Native shamanic cultures. a few good books and weeks of reading here on the Nexus, and I found my way...

Joe Rogan didn't influence me at all, I had already made up my mind.
 
Also in the UK here.

DMT is becoming more popular in my opinion. You can see evidence of this on the internet, in places like this. People using it now are way ahead of the curve. I predict it will become popular in the underground scenes of the UK over the next 1-2 years. The sensationalism will reach its peak with a media shit-storm over some kid who became deluded after smoking 20 spice joints a day and killed himself/his mother because the elves told him to. Resulting in mimosa hostilis root bark and other natural sources of DMT being made illegal in the UK. When this does eventually happen, I would like everyone to be made aware of the impending ban so we can each buy up a few kilos of bark before it's too late.
 
yeah man.. I think our best bet is to stay one step ahead of the game by looking at alternative sources like phalaris and other legal psychedelics that ron and the likes are working on. You'll know yourself if you reside in the uk that all these fucking "legal party highs" are getting some bad press at the moment... my fear is that they'll lump it all together and our vendors will go swimming down the plug.

my bet is that it will happen, maybe sooner than we think.
 
IMO: from experience.

DMT is still uncommon in the UK. Its all about the rc's atm, the general public have the mind set to look into all this. If you was to ask all your "dealers" of other products for spice it would be a 99% chance rate of saying "wat is that/ no" (in the captial)

The people you meet at the festival are probally the few other 100-1000s of people using it. Naturally the festival will attract like minded people so its only natural, well highly like i.e much greater chance for it to be present.

The increase of internet resources has helped bring about awarenes a great deal, like the searching on google, erowid, nexus and like wise. (mayb this is eventually going to shoot the whole topic in the foot).

And this new thing to ban all new emerging substances should not effect mimosa as its not sold as a legal high, nor is it chemical, its just dye at the end of the day, and does not cause harm as it is, unless u was to throw it as a kilo packet or similar?

With young teens taking it then fucking up and causing a shit storm on the scene, yes that could happen, but generally the people participating in this would do there reading before hand, i would be assuming to say but it is vry unlikley a teen in this country would bother to extract if he or she did not know of the fuller picture. Even so if they were to make a brew, again the average UK kid wouldnt dare drink the stuff.

However I still also have concerns about this.
 
I also heard of DMT first from Mr. Mckenna. I only heard about extracting it after researching mescaline extractions about a year and a half ago. If it wasn't for the simplicity of the standard STB tek that's around i don't know if i would've ever gotten into it.

I think it is probably only a matter of time until mhrb is banned in the UK. I went to a psy party a few months ago and i smelt DMT on the dance floor! I couldn't believe people were smoking it at a party indoors with shitloads of people. It is definitely growing in popularity.

Oh yeah, i heard the other day that the two dudes who supposedly died from mephedrone (meow-meow) during a night out in Brighton, UK actually hadn't taken mephedrone at all. Nothin, nada. So the case which initially got the media going crazy and led to the drug being banned was a complete pile of kak. Same thing could happen to DMT.
 
It perturbs me that I cannot first recall where I heard about DMT.

Years and years ago, I do recall, my best friend said to me, "Let's go to South America and get a shaman!"

I basically wrote him off and was like, "Yeah, whatever, I'd rather just smoke DMT."

I can tell you all the who-what-where-whens of how I discovered Aya... but DMT has been something I've wanted to encounter, probably since 19? 20? Don't know how I learned. I was obsessed with the pineal and astral projection, though, quit fluoride a long time ago.

As for the media getting riled up, this is why it's so important to educate everyone as much as possible (especially fellow sharers of the sacrament), and teach through example an attitude of respect. Nowhere in a properly prepared ritual space is there room for something idiotic or tragic going wrong in a public setting. Consciously tending to setting is to establish physical safety of the body! (and mind, and spirit :) ) To teach about setting and respect... is the best we can do.

After I first drank Ayahuasca (and spent WEEEEKS researching how to prepare!) I felt slightly jipped that my entire generation knows nothing about how to prepare for engaging psychedelics entheogenically. I also felt extremely blessed that I basically took huge gambles with mushrooms without this knowledge, and still managed to accomplish lots of positive work.

I did my first extraction in the middle of nowhere on some friends land and travveled in a yurt.

I heard the drone and was scared, but then I realized wait it's supposed to happen and I was just floored. God I love everything. I love all of you.
 
In all honesty, the first time I heard of it was via Shpongle and the friend who introduced me to Shpongle. I was 16.

I didn't give it a second thought until I became interested in entheogens via Carlos Castaneda--
And in all honesty I can't see someone becoming interested in entheogens and NOT hearing of DMT, the thing about DMT was that all roads led to it, it is spoken of in hushed whispers as the penultimate visionary tool. It was simply a matter of time before I began getting truly interested in it, just a few months after my 18th birthday. I actually found out more about Terence because of DMT, not the other way around.

If the entheogens form a pyramid, DMT (and all of its entity-contacting weirdness) seemed to hold an esteemed place at the top. This was my perception some time ago...

Now I've told a fair many of my friends about it, and of those who have tried it I know at least one who will begin extracting himself and no doubt tell yet more people... It just spreads. There are two reasons I think it does so, finding favor with the current cohort of young folk: it's physically very safe, and it's easy to extract at home. Because it's been so esoteric in the past, it also has none of the stigma associated with acid or shrooms. Acid these days is from such sketchy sources that it isn't so easily the psychedelic of the discreet student masses, whereas almost anyone who smokes DMT will either extract themselves or know the person who extracts.

What do you mean by quitting fluoride ms?
 
Sounds slightly suspect to me I have to say. Can anyone point me to a good source to read more on this?
