The official "Is this chem ok to use? / Where can I find ...?" thread

Migrated topic.
It is a common question that people ask, if a certain chemical is OK to use for extraction or not, and also where to find such and such chemical. Instead of cluttering up the forum with hundreds of threads about it, those who have these question can post here (and threads made with such questions will be merged here).

But before asking such questions, here's a few important links you should THOROUGHLY read:

FAQ: Is my solvent/chemical OK to use ?

thank you so much i had a friend who used it but i did not one hundred percent trust his judgement. do you happen to know any other company just as a back up or anything like that?

I had posted this in an independent thread (improperly) so I'm moving it here.

In my country it looks almost impossible to find white distilled vinegar. White wine vinegar, red wine vinegar, balsamic vinegar, sherry, apple, brandy... you name it. But white vinegar is nowhere to be found. I have not given up yet, but almost.

I am looking forward to trying an STB with a vinegar pre-soak. What alternatives should I consider?

Thank you.

Hey guys I was wondering if anyone has any info on where to find Dichloromethane without a license or shipping to a business address.

The only product I have found info on that contains DCM for anything other than chem reagent is Freon 30 refridgerant (pure DCM) which I dont have a clue how to get. Any info would be great :D.

Im currently a university student so I am also curious if I would be able to ship to my school any inconspicuous chems that require a business address, or are these chems 'clearly' marked and flagged, say a small amount of Phosphoryl Chloride?. Any thoughts or experiences doing this?

trouble finding lye at lowes, ace, or home depot. found instant power main line opener which states it has sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide but doesn't list anything else. can someone help decipher the msds? also states that it has a ph of 14. thanks everyone!

endlessness, man you are on quick to answer! well like i said that's all it's saying on the msds. did you get a chance to check it out?
saw near the bottom of the msds stating sodium hydroxide at 18-28% and potassium hydroxide at 0-1%. would the rest be water? nothing else is listed.

yes it is in liquid form. you know i just found a couple of soap making stores in my area that i think i'll hit up tomorrow. doing my first extractions and of course want everything to going smoothly. thanks again for the reply endlessness. :)

sorry I posted something here and then I realized that I already knew the answer to the question. I dont know how to delete the post so maybe a moderator can delete it for me or if not then I will just use it to say hello. Hello.

CAS 92045-53-9
Name: Naphtha (petroleum) hydrodesulfurized light dearomatized

Hi guys.
I'm one of the n00bs around here.
Living in a non-US country, and non-english speaking country, digging up the right chems and gear can be somewhat of a challenge in it self.
Not to mention getting hold of plant material with spice in it.
I'm getting ready for doing my first extraction - and hopefully afterwards; my first DMT experience.
- and I promise to let you know how everything is coming along :)

Regarding chems I have found an over the counter solvent which is the one mentioned above.
Can any of you guys confirm that this is a save one to use. The local manufacture writes that it is 95-100% pure.
And in a MSDS found through lookchem, ( http://www.lookchem.com/msds/Naphth...ulfurized-light,-dearomatized(92045-53-9).pdf ) it says that it is 100& volatile organic - this should mean that ever-thing will evaporate, right?

I'll still try to make an evaporation as mentioned one should always do, in the chem FAQ.

Thank you.

Best

Hi again.
I did an evaporation of aprox 5 ml in a petri dish and an evaporation on a piece of mirror.
In both cases I could see that some sort of evaporation had taken place. There was like 'edges' as to where the solvent had bordered up against areas (on the piece of mirror) where no solvent was. There is no smell of petro-chemicals, but googling around afterwards, I happened to come across this note of warning on erowid regarding naphtha.

When you guys are evaporating naphtha, are there is no sign of evaporations at all? - I wish I had a fine scale weight, as I could have done a measurement of the petri dish before and after.

I the article on erowid, the author is evaporating 1000 ml and I guys in general we should do an evap of more than just a few drops to see if there really is any impurities in our solvents?

The link: Erowid Psychoactive Vaults : Chemistry : Naptha Extraction Warning

Any thoughts?

Take care out there.

Cheers

Anyone know of the best place to obtain Limonene?
I'm trying to do a couple pulls from my left over lye/MHRB mixture after doing several with naptha.
Also, is there a difference between D-Limonene and Limonene?
And if so, which would be best for this?
I found a chemical supply store near me that sells "Limonene" for $43 US Dollars for 500ml.
Is that a normal price for this stuff? Seems high!
Would my best bet to track down a safe online source?
Thanks again, I freaking love this forum!

I guess that you are based in the US, so I cant help you. Did you checked in the supplier section?
No there is no difference, limonene is an abbreviation.
Im sure that buying it online would be cheaper.

Yep, I'm in the US. Meant to mention that!
I've looked some through the suppliers section and it looks like gratefulbuys.com might have the best deal on Limonene.
I was guessing that Limonene was an abbreviation until I saw that my local chemical supply store was selling Limonene for $43 for 500ml and D-Limonene for almost $80.
Compared to the prices of gratefulbuys.com those people are running a criminal operation!:p
Thank you Dante!

Got this from an art supply store (in CA) because they did not have bestine. http://www.speedballart.com/cms_wfc/uploads/170.pdf
There is not too much information on the specific chemical composition other than the generic name Synthetic Isoparaffinic Hydrocarbon.
It calls it Naphtha under the department of transportation shipping instructions.

Anyway, I looked up the CAS number in the upper right and found this page

Here it says it is Hydrotreated heavy naphtha among other synonyms.
I looked up msds' on other napthas (VMP I believe and klean strip) and I believe they were light or medium mixes. I also remember reading somewhere that white spirits are to be steered away from? Just curious why? Being 'heavier' are they less likely to evaporate?
The obvious thing here would be to do an evap test I suppose, but I have not opened it yet and would rather just exchange it and save my money and give a longer look for bestine somewhere else if one of you guys can tell me that it is unsuitable.

Thanks in advance. And sorry if I missed an answer to this somewhere else. Earlier in the thread, someone asked a question like mine but I'm not sure that it was answered. I searched around the forum a bit and found nothing either.
