The official "Is this chem ok to use? / Where can I find ...?" thread

Migrated topic.
It is a common question that people ask, if a certain chemical is OK to use for extraction or not, and also where to find such and such chemical. Instead of cluttering up the forum with hundreds of threads about it, those who have these question can post here (and threads made with such questions will be merged here).

But before asking such questions, here's a few important links you should THOROUGHLY read:

FAQ: Is my solvent/chemical OK to use ?

Hey, I'm new to the forum and just wanted to check something.
I was reading the lazymantek and just wanted to check if these chemicals where ok to use.

Bartoline Premium Low Odour White Spirit 2L from B&Q (UK)
Boots own brand caustic soda. (UK)

Sorry if this has been asked before, there is a lot of info on this site and I thought this would be the easiest way to get the clearest answer.

Many thanks

I imagine the caustic soda would be fine.

Stay away from that white spirit. It's near impossible to dry out your spice efficently after contact with this stuff.

Get some store bought lighter fluid for refillable lighters (not aerosol).

Why not a simple A/B without solvents, and filtering the alkaloids? Check our wiki for more rue teks, like harmala extraction guide, or Tao of rue,

MEK is even less polar than acetone, and acetone is already a horrible solvent for harmalas, dont use that

You're right. I was afraid all the other tek's called for lye which is hard to find here. Turns out the Harmala extraction guide that I overlooked and you mentioned only needs sodium carbonate. It seems much more complicated than the one which calls for ethyl/methyl, but it's probably worth it.

Thank you for your patient response.

Look for solvent section in the hardware store, read labels, also when you get home look up "brandname MSDS" in google, and let us know what you can find so we can advise you. Also in bigger cities there could be chemical/lab supply stores.

Nafta, hexano, heptano, solvente alifático, etc, words like these are what you should be looking for.

Or for the other chemicals, lye would be Soda Caustica, or Hidróxido de Sódio.. It could be in the cleaning aisle of supermarkets or hardware stores. Lye is alse used sometimes for olive conserving.

If you want to do the dry teks you would use Hidróxido de Calcio as a base.

SWIM took a while to figure out what naphta is outside of the states, more precise, which one is okay to use in germany, due to there are lots of different mixtures and solvents, a lot not suitable for SWIM.

Because SWIM never found a direct tip around here or somewhere else in the net,
here are some tested advices from SWIM that might help interested people in Germany.

Useful Naphta-Equivalents (clean and work great) to be found in Germany:

- all kinds of Wundbenzin, though they are mostly bought in pharmacies (but for everybody, eg. for a paintjob). Thats the hyperclean version by german standards of naphta, ment to be suitable for pharmaceutical grade jobs.

- Waschbenzin, not the hyperclean standard as wundbenzin, but with the right brand very very good and suitable, admits SWIM.
a brand that SWIM advices is E-COLL Waschbenzin, over and over very good and clean.

Might be a little help for searches out of the US, with best regards by SWIM!

We have the same thing here in the Netherlands.
Its called wasbenzine in Dutch.
Its one carbon longer than heptane, its octane.
Very clean white pulls.

Is there a definative list of UK available tried and tested materials that can be purchased cash on the high street?
Edit: I am thinking specifically for Noman's Tek.

For naphtha I was using lighter fluid. Swan, ronsonol and newport are all clean. For lye just go to b&q or a hardware shop and look for caustic soda, I think even boots sell it. All the other bits and pieces (separatory funnel, rubber spatula and stuff) I dont know, I never used any of that stuff.

Btw, I think the consensus is that an ammonia wash is bad/inefficient. Search the forum about it, might be worth just skipping that step.

Thanks PhOG. Hopefully all set up for my first go in the next week or so.
