The "Deem" Thing - It shouldn't bother me, but it does!

Migrated topic.

As a tertiary thought... Mushrooms don't seem to have a negative slang term that I can think of. Can anyone else?

Mushrooms seem to have established their respect and relevancy as a sacred entheogen. This is interesting. Perhaps it is because mushrooms have the ability to telepathically communicate with all human beings. I sometimes wonder if they have a special little brain in that cute little cap of theirs. :p

Peace!

But, yea, as to the telepathy thing, I ate 275 mg of mescaline this past sunday and I currently have 3 casings and an experimental monotub casing with cakes anchored to it set up and fruiting in my bedroom. Throughout the whole experience, not only was i inundated with visual similarities to mushrooms, they were in my subconscious. Seriously, I sensed them, heard them calling to me, "saw" them in my minds eye as a result of them trying to communicate. I had never experienced anything on this level before, it was truly amazing. So, like I said, your comment on telepathic mushrooms really resonates with me and I was wondering if you could elaborate.

my last two spice journeys of the recent 3 i was submersed in a fish tank cage with "lava lamp" type mushrooms floating all around and through it...

the same trip happened 5 days later and im pretty sure it was my mushrooms calling to me
i just recently finished my first flush ever and am saving it for les claypool in tulsa this weekend
i havent hit spice since then because i feel as if the mushrooms have something to say first

i was rockin the isle at phish new years in miami this year and guy asks me
"wanna go to church"... i had never heard that one but he let me hit some for the end of bathtub gin

Words are only specks on a page or vibrations in the air...

they mean nothing

the listener is the only one who provides them power

language is a river flowing to time and culture

not a static code meant for only one interpretation

i wanted to admit that im guilty of using the "D word", but in all honesty it was only out of ignorance...

i thought that the term was just an internet term only for forums to be discreet and not have to actually say DMT, sort of like the SWIM thing, which im still confused about when and where i should actually use it, lol.

after reading this thread and realizing and understanding all of your views on this, i will say that i will most definitely cease the use of this word.

i will also say that no word anyone could say is EVER going to offend me because like deamsterphile said, its really up to the listener to give that word/s any power.

for those who find it demeaning or insulting to the molecule (which i understand).. just try and let words be words and nothing more.

your only offended if you choose to be IMO.

I personally use "deem" as opposed to writing DMT <- that right there makes me think "drug"

but spice, deem, the light is new :), and other petnames for this incredible tryptamine are just petnames.. I use them with the backbone that everyone here knows that its just a name, and it shouldnt bother people using those names.

I do however agree that calling anyone in this community a "Deemer" is absolutely absurd. We are not little children trying to find the next super big high, we are all psychonauts, were here to EXPLORE our minds, to find truths to questions our unexpanded minds cant begin to comprehend, not here to look at pretty lights, and go out to party all kinds of fucked up and drive all FUBAR while smoking changa because you want to be COOL, You could DIE, then no more spice or trying to be cool.

I blew off the original subject there for a second. In all cases, if I were referred to by someone to be a deemer, i would lay them out. Thats the STUPIDEST name for anyone who experiences dmt on a daily basis.

and no offense to the people that use that word, its the word that is ignorant, not the user of it.

Well I would like to say that Ihave to disagree with everyone with this post. First off I feel everyone is being judgemental over a word. The only connotations behind the word are the ones you put behind it. You guys are lumping together everyone who uses that word as either a drug dealer or a brain dead festival going party kid which simply isnt true and is unfair to people who use that word. Thats what I and others have come to know it as. That does not mean we dont respect and revere what we have in fact its quite the opposite. I did nothing wrong yet I get considered beneath you if I use a cettain word. The logic behind that is insane. Should we ban the nexus member named Deemster. Imean we cant even use the word here the we surely cant have someone running around with that name. I out of respect for the Traveler and the nexus have decided not yo use the word here. Hopefully respect can go both ways and some nexians will realise not all"Deemster" users are the preconcieved notions that they have constructed. This will be the last I speak on this subject. Thank you for reading.

What others?

and did you not read half the peoples posts? stating "I mean no offense to the people currently using the word?" Im not trying to upset anyone who uses deemster. I do not disrespect anyone (but knowledgestick). I didnt put you on a cross and belittle you or anyone else who says "deemster".

I attacked a word, with words, because I do not enjoy being "Lumped" into a category, much like you believe you have. No one has lumped you into a brain dead, or festy goer, or a dealer.. we are not discussing PEOPLE we are discussing the usage of a word.

No one has said that people who use the word are anything... because everyone has their own vocabulary. We, being the people who do not like the word (i hope you dont mind me speaking for you), think its the word that isnt right, NoT ThE PeRsOn ThAt UsEs it!

**Again please do not take any offense.. I am not bashing people who use Deemster to describe themselves and other DMT explorers. I am simply stating that I think it is a bad WORD.

By others I mean close travelers hat do not frequent the nexus. And actually it has been said that people that use that word are noobs to dmt which is a false statement also another member stated that when swim uses that word they feel such anger as to harm the person for using it. WOW. Again its just a word no need for all of that.Would it be that bad if it was called "Dream" or Dreamster" probably not. So this issue will always be an agree to disaree issue im sure. No disrespect taken hopefully none given. You say "Spice" I say "Deemster" its cool because we all say Brother and Sister. I am done with topic for my opinion has been stated.

This is all semantics, conjecture, and/or personal opinions

Words do make us "feel" a certain way, each person takes it their own way.

Instead of saying GOD DAMN IT, we say HOLY COW

Its silly, and makes no difference in the scope of reality

Not quite, language only works due to convention. And the convention is: "deemster" is a negative word for dmt.

convention, meaning the way things have been and aught to be? a behavior considered acceptable by to most members of a society.

If we went by convention DMT would be the dirty word!!! let alone any other word

Its a reflection of the growing/evolving society

This debate furthers no intellectual debate, it only serves for mindless banter

I agree. Language is arbitrary, subjective, and so on. And to be honest, the word 'Deemster' sounds like some dumb shit 16 year old would say to sound cool at a party. It might make me a judgemental prick, but if I heard someone in my vicinity say 'deemster,' I would immediately have a less than favorable opinion of them. Judgemental and irrational of me? Probably.

The nexus is a community and our opinions shape how we interact with each other and are viewed by the rest of the world. I understand how creating opinions about words could be interpreted as elitist but communities are about shared perceptions.

The 'deem' variants never sat right with me but I couldn't figure out why. These two posts on the first page really brought it into focus for me and I have to say that I completely agree:

...it is associated with buying/selling...

That's exactly how I've felt about it and considering that the Nexus isn't about either of those things, I agree with encouraging people to save those terms for elsewhere. There is a larger picture to consider here. Like it or not, there is a negative connotation with the 'deem' variant descriptors and linking that to the Nexus is not a good thing.

Sure, it's just a word, a flavor of the month, but that little fashion accessory doesn't need to be here if it makes the Nexus guilty by association with the connotations that word brings.

In defense of anyone who uses the 'deem' variant words, I've called pot pot for the 26 years that I've smoked it and don't plan on calling it anything else (I do cringe when people call it dope though). Haha, we're all so funny with our little hangups.

Oh ya, and we called mushrooms 'zoomers' where I grew up. It probably doesn't get worse than that. Haha. But we could pick em by the pound off the cow turds in fields and we were like 15 so give us a break.

True in one respect BUT we're all (I presume) living in a culture where these words have definite connotations attached to them, so much that the connotation is blurred with the denotation of the word. Calling a man who is black a "Nigger" has definite meaning within that context, "Nigger" denotes disrespect and something less than human. Same with "Deemsters", like the others I've only seen it used by disrespectful dealers and those involved in shady stuff, it seems to denote possession rather than respect as Traveler (I believe noted).

The real question now that a pretty clear consensus has emerged: should it be banned from the site, or should people who use it simply be asked to use another more respectful word? (and be banned only if they're violating other terms of the site?)

I never refer to this molecule without using the full title "Dimethyltryptamine, Sacred Divinity of the Eternal Union of Evolutionary Divine Sacredness."

To abbreviate it is necessarily disrespectful and means that you probably sell lye contams for the Mexican Mafia.

'Tis but thy name that is my enemy;
O, be some other name!
What's in a name? that which we call the spice
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So deemster would, were he not deemster call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. deemster, doff thy name,
And for that name which is no part of thee
Take all myself.

The bard was wise.

ohh - and to quote myself from another thread:

I love referring to it as "spice"; so descriptive, mysterious untraceable and ungoogleable. Really captures its essence somehow. "The molecule" is fine too, just a little colder, less mystical; "spice" makes me think of trade routes, of new worlds and empires and of spires and temples, of mysterious concoctions, of olfactory delight, of gustatory bliss, of unequaled culinary ecstasy, of novel tastes and of the simple and unique, of untried experience and well trodden innocence, of creation, of culture, of consumption, of variety (of course), of sex, of mystical union, of orgasm, of transcendence and of mixing and combining and numbing and of well veiled and ancient alchemy and witch-crockery...
