Not sure if this is common knowledge already but after a few runs I've noticed that when making the acid pulls alkaline if you carefully increase pH to 6 you can precipitate lots of impurities which usually removed when repeating A/B.
I don't think it is 'plant material' since at pH under 4ish it remains soluble.
so the idea is to remove more impurities during the first precipitation... since you can decant/syphon off the acid solution to later increase the pH further.
Considering the pka of harmine at most you would lose say 1% maybe a bit more if you overshoot a bit. I've gotten much cleaner harmalas in shorter time.
