DMT for Treatment and Prevention of Neurodegenerative Disorders

A Single Step

Rising Star
I am interested in this subject because my mother started exhibiting Alzheimer's disease at the age of 55 and died 10 years later. My maternal grandfather died from Parkinson's disease before I was born. I am 48 years old and lately have noticed changes in my cognitive abilities, though I still function at a high level. Is anybody here taking DMT on a regular, semi-frequent basis for the purpose of addressing similar concerns? Or using DMT regularly for other purposes and noticing improved cognitive performance (or reduction in rate of cognitive decline) as an added benefit? What is your frequency, and for how long have you been using in this way?

One part of me wants to use DMT more frequently because I always feel refreshed and energized (even euphoric) on the comedown and afterwards, however I have some aversion. Even when I take a small dose, the experience is somewhat somewhat less than pleasant.

Background: I have never had a full breakthrough experience, even using e-mesh loaded with ~50mg DMT. I seem to have a very high tolerance for psychedelics in general. For instance I have taken ~65mg of psilocybin analogues such as 4-HO-MiPT and had rather moderate intensity level trips. On the other hand I am also sensitive to a 1mg micro-dose of the same substance.

I worry about Parkinsons personally because it’s associated somewhat with ankylosing spondylitis which I already have. I am 41 and I just don’t want to increase my chances any more than they already are..

I do use some psychs for the at times really really bad brain fog, total exhaustion, anxiety etc that comes with it. I can tell that I experience a lot of neuro-inflammation and I can microdose for that. LSD works well. I have found I can feel sharper with less fatigue, brain fog and stressful thoughts for a time after ketamine as long as I dissociate.

Micro dosing mescaline helps me. DMT, psilocybin I both use but I will go for LSD, mesc or probly 2cb microdose if I need outward production.

I don’t do it enough these days tbh and I’m worried a bit about heart issues with chronic dosing of 5ht agonists.

I’m pretty partial to just a 16th of a blotter(LSD) and some weed. In addicted to caffeine and it apparently great for cognitive junk but rheumatologist says it’s working against me so I want to cut that one.

I’m still looking for more stuff to help with the cognitive side and the anxiety which is just bad for your brain in the long run. I figure a bunch of it is related to ADHD as well because I tested high for it, it’s correlated with ankylosing spondylitis…as well as maternal auto immune diseases involving an antigen my mother and I have(causing the AS) increasing chances on ADHD. I talked to a Dr. but real diagnosis is $$$ even in Canada if you’re over 18.

Aside from psychedelics though, and honestly more importantly to me is to eat well and be active every day. You should be exercising every day and get enough sunlight. I try to skateboard every day before work for 30 minutes and surf 2-3 times a week, skimboard if I can’t surf etc. I don’t like jogging or working out so I just make sure I surf and skate a lot. I’ve been doing it since grade 3 and so I can do it..it makes me happy, releases dopamine. I would quit the psychedelics and just surf every day if I had to choose. Everyone should find something physical and engaging to do a bit each day I think.

The longest lived happiest lived people seem to live pretty simple but very active and engaging lives.

I've heard hot peppers help to prevent too. I eat extra-hots every day.

Exercise is the foremost medicine for almost anything, including for neuroprotection.

Diet is also very crucial.

And as @northape mentioned, good long term relationships is a central factor as well.

For me rue is the most effective plant that clears brain fog and empowers my mind. İt's neuroprotective properties are well documented.

Tryptamines are of course also well known for neuroprotective effects.

But if I had to pick one admixture on top of rue for the purpose of neuroprotection, it would be Salvia (a local species containing salvinorin a in my case). The sublime mental refreshment and clarity of rue + salvia afterglow is on another league for me. İ either eat it or drink as a tea. Tea feels healthier.

Thank you all for the excellent responses. I am a lifelong avid bicyclist and I take care to get enough sleep and exercise. The hot food tip is news to me. I was really into spicy-hot as a child, maybe it's time to reacclimate. I currently take one of the special curcumin preparations. I think it is the liposomal.

I am curious about the use of harmala/rue. What are your protocols for cognitive refreshment (preparation, dose, frequency)?

I'd say that it's an art form. Trying to know just one medicine takes years. For sure, you can get lots of benefits, but it's a process.
Maybe someone else could give a different opinion. Try to weight all the options and see what works for you.
🙏

Seems like an oral brew might be more pleasant for you as it is more organic and less shocking, and you would get the harmala benefits as well. If you go full on Ayahuasca analogue and you want to do it regularly, you can feel into how often you want to do it.

With drinking only rue, there are people here who report they feel benefits from daily micro doses or even normal doses, but I can't do it so often as it affects me greatly, and I personally would not recommend it. If you make the space to meditate with it, a few times a week is possible, imo.

You can try quidding salvia leaves after drinking rue as well. I doubt you would not notice the general energetic and mental rejuvenation that comes from this combination.

Great that you are an exerciser. Do you fast? 2-3 day fasts are reported to bring about miracles for the brain, for inflammation and for increasing bdnf. Intermittent fasting also helps prevent brain fog.

Could you clarify do you feel refreshed and energized or is it less than pleasant?

For me the afterglow of a DMT experience is refreshing and energizing, but the trip can feel less than pleasant.
I also feel the same way post dmt, I was curious what makes the experience unpleasant? And also that could really be the key to getting the most out of these types of medicine. For example when I run into an uncomfortable thought or feeling I know that I just need to lean into it and sit with it, for me personally that's the only way I have found to resolve them.
