I'm not that smart conventionally speaking and struggled with that for years. Because of various life issues, I was unable to get a complete higher education, even though I was "going to university" for close to a decade. However, now I see it as a superpower. Many of my friends "brainwashed" themselves into a specific way of thinking, and you can no longer fill their cup. They will give you a reasonable explanation for almost everything, but somehow it never goes beyond a certain limit set by the education system. Even so-called freethinkers do it inside the system. This is not a diss at you at all, just a preamble.
My meditation skills or nervous system are not developed enough to experience emptiness, so I'm operating on a conceptual level here. I don't know what emptiness really is, and to me, it's just one more concept. "No view" for me is simply a reminder not to hold on to any solid position and to remain fluid. It's just a practical tool, similar to Sri Ramana's self-inquiry or the "Who am I?" direction of questioning. Even if I wanted to cling to emptiness, I'm not at that stage yet, so I see it as just another view and it loses its power.
For instance, self-inquiry is not a question, but a 180-degree turn in attention. That "Who am I?" can be used as a simple tool in the beginning to condition yourself to look inward. I feel the "no view" philosophy is quite similar in that way, even if the framing is different. You let go of all set beliefs until only pure awareness is left, and then you rest in it. There is no need for conceptualizing at all.
We can dive deep into theories and how we understand them, but at the end of the day, the practical side of things is simple: relax and just be. All these thoughts steal our attention and keep us in a box. See the space where these thoughts appear, investigate what they are, and ask who is investigating. That is much easier for me to understand and apply. I hope you understand my position now.
Oh, and we shouldn't forget love and warmheartedness. Without them, it's all dry and dead, really. Love gives everything energy and direction. It is love that will save us in the end. Love and wisdom are one and the same anyway.
I don't see how we can skip ego work at all. Even if someone tries to kill their ego, it would be the ego doing the killing, which will never happen. Ego cannot escape itself, and true liberation always happens from a higher level of existence. All we can do as egos is to mature enough and create the conditions for real Truth to bloom. The seeds of freedom live in every mind, and we just need to water them. Here comes love once again. Presence or mindfulness plays a big role, too.
Someday, your reference point will shift from the ego to a greater space, but it will never be through the ego's effort. I try to live the best I can and trust the process. I've had a few glimpses of a bigger mind in my life, so my faith is relatively strong. Everything I wrote is a personal understanding of life and myself. Sure, I was conditioned by culture and so on, yet there is something living in every heart that is beyond it all. That
gem gives me hope and the energy to endure.
Much love
